{"id":52142,"date":"2024-01-25T06:45:32","date_gmt":"2024-01-25T06:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/dawn-survey-becomes-basis-for-research-paper\/"},"modified":"2024-01-25T06:45:32","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T06:45:32","slug":"dawn-survey-becomes-basis-for-research-paper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/dawn-survey-becomes-basis-for-research-paper\/","title":{"rendered":"Dawn survey becomes basis for research paper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>LONDON: An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1494208\">in-depth digital survey<\/a> on Pakistan\u2019s suicide rates conducted online by <em>Dawn<\/em> in 2020 became the basis for a peer-reviewed research paper published in a renowned research journal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerceptions of Suicide among Pakistanis: Results of an Online Survey\u201d <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/13811118.2024.2305397\">published<\/a> by <em>Taylor &amp; Francis<\/em> was co-authored by two <em>Dawn<\/em> journalists. The paper said the research leverages the results from a 12-item online survey circulated by <em>Dawn.com<\/em>, which assessed personal experiences, opinions and attitudes towards help-seeking in the context of suicide.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1721689\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The survey found that between 15 and 35 people end their lives in Pakistan every day, which is as high as one person every hour.<\/p>\n<p>Co-author of the report Dr Murad Khan, who is a professor and lead scientist for suicide research and prevention at the Brain and Mind Institute, Aga Khan University, Pakistan and Kenya, told <em>Dawn<\/em>: \u201cIn countries like Pakis\u00adtan, where data on a sensitive subject like suicide is difficult to obtain, using surveys like for a scientific publication is very creative. <em>Dawn<\/em>\u2019s online survey which tapped into a cross-section of Pakistani society gave a wealth of information which otherwise would be very hard to obtain.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote-level-1\">\n<p>Survey finds 15-35 people end their lives in Pakistan every day<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cBy turning the <em>Dawn<\/em> survey findings into a scientific publication, we were able to make valid interpretations and make them available for suicide researchers around the world. It is indexed in the world\u2019s premier database (Medline) which is accessed by researchers around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The paper says that the results show personal experiences related to suicide and self-harm as well as encounters in social circles were common in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMental illness tended to be recognised as a high likelihood contributor to suicide death over and above nonviolent interpersonal problems. Most considered suicide a way to escape pain, and few considered suicide to be immoral. Barriers to help-seeking included social deterrents, inaccessibility and unaffordability.
