{"id":51936,"date":"2024-01-24T18:51:33","date_gmt":"2024-01-24T18:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/donald-trump-closes-in-on-biden-rematch-after-new-hampshire-win\/"},"modified":"2024-01-24T18:51:33","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T18:51:33","slug":"donald-trump-closes-in-on-biden-rematch-after-new-hampshire-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/donald-trump-closes-in-on-biden-rematch-after-new-hampshire-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Trump closes in on Biden rematch after New Hampshire win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Donald Trump won the key New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, moving him ever closer to locking in the Republican presidential nomination and securing an extraordinary White House rematch with US President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<p>With around 80 per cent of votes counted, Trump\u2019s winning margin hovered at about 11 percentage points, but his sole remaining challenger Nikki Haley vowed to fight on.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, 77, attacked Haley in a rambling victory speech and said that when the primary contest reaches her home state of South Carolina, \u201cwe\u2019re going to win easily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s address was loaded with his trademark ominous warnings about immigration as he continued to lie about winning the 2020 election.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1798787\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In her speech, Haley insisted the race was \u201cfar from over\u201d and told supporters that Democrats actually want to run against her former boss, due to his record of sowing \u201cchaos.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know Trump is the only Republican in the country who Joe Biden can defeat,\u201d Haley, 52, said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite adding New Hampshire to his previous easy victory in Iowa \u2014 and looking near unstoppable as he seeks to become the Republican candidate in November \u2014 Trump kept to his hard-right messaging, with no hint of reaching out to the more moderate voters who supported Haley.<\/p>\n<p>At one point swearing on primetime TV, Trump said the United States was a \u201cfailing country\u201d and claimed that undocumented migrants were coming from psychiatric hospitals and prisons and \u201ckilling our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden responded by saying: \u201cIt is now clear that Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd my message to the country is the stakes could not be higher. Our Democracy. Our personal freedoms \u2014 from the right to choose to the right to vote,\u201d Biden said in a statement.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"two-horse-race\" href=\"#two-horse-race\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Two-horse race<\/h2>\n<p>With strong turnout in the northeastern state, Haley had hoped for a major upset. But US broadcasters quickly projected her defeat as the first tallies came in.<\/p>\n<p>Trump was already the runaway leader in national Republican polling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1523135\">despite<\/a> two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1601344\">impeachments<\/a> as president, and four <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1806667\">criminal<\/a> trials hanging over him since leaving office.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1806990\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>While Haley repeatedly questioned Trump\u2019s mental fitness, her efforts in New Hampshire were not expected to create much more than a speed bump for the populist right-winger\u2019s surge to November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a two-person race now between Trump and Biden,\u201d Keith Nahigian, a veteran of six presidential campaigns and former member of Trump\u2019s transition team, told <em>AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>New Hampshire was markedly more Haley-friendly than the states she will subsequently face, should she stay in the race, and continuing into February and South Carolina will be a tough sell.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"dim-outlook-for-haley\" href=\"#dim-outlook-for-haley\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Dim outlook for Haley<\/h2>\n<p>Trump won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1806396\">crushing<\/a> victory in the first Republican contest in Iowa last week, with Haley a distant third.<\/p>\n<p>What was once a crowded field of 14 candidates then narrowed to a one-on-one matchup on Sunday after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis dropped out following his second-place Iowa finish.<\/p>\n<p>No Republican has ever won both opening contests and not ultimately secured the party\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Trump did little actual campaigning in New Hampshire. However, his message \u2014 a mixture of personal grievance and right-wing culture war firing his base \u2014 has delivered the kind of momentum that supporters believe will sweep him back into the White House.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s gonna be a wipeout for Biden. He\u2019s gone,\u201d said Luis Ferre, 72, who travelled from New York to be at Trump\u2019s election night party at a Nashua hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Haley spent the week hammering the message, backed by polling, that most Americans do not want to see a Trump-Biden rematch. That, however, may not be enough to prevent the inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNikki Haley\u2019s supporters will surely feel that Tuesday night in New Hampshire was a reasonably good night.
