Experts warned on Sunday \u00a0that \u00a0arsenic \u00a0concentration \u00a0in groundwater has reached \u00a0alarming levels. Professor \u00a0of \u00a0Chemistry \u00a0Dr Muhammad Ijaz Bhatti \u00a0said \u00a0inorganic \u00a0arsenic\u00a0is\u00a0found in groundwater \u00a0worldwide. He said drinking \u00a0water \u00a0is \u00a0regarded \u00a0as \u00a0safe\u00a0 and \u00a0suitable \u00a0for \u00a0consumption when it adheres \u00a0to the guidelines set by the \u00a0World Health Organisation \u00a0(WHO) or the regulatory \u00a0 body of any region. \u00a0<\/p>\n

One of \u00a0the\u00a0fundamental \u00a0human \u00a0rights \u00a0is \u00a0access \u00a0to \u00a0safe potable water, yet the \u00a0majority of the world\u2019s population, particularly in less \u00a0economically advanced nations, is deprived of the essential commodity, regrets \u00a0the WHO.\u00a0Inorganic arsenic has been recognised \u00a0as\u00a0a\u00a0 substance that can cause cancer.<\/p>\n

In \u00a0Pakistan, only \u00a030 \u00a0percent \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0population \u00a0has \u00a0access to piped water, which \u00a0is \u00a0rarely \u00a0subjected \u00a0to \u00a0thorough analysis for drinking \u00a0water parameters. Likewise, in Punjab, most of the population uses groundwater for \u00a0drinking purposes. \u00a0The groundwater is pumped out through wells, \u00a0by hand pumps and electric \u00a0pumps.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is the \u00a0need of the hour to measure \u00a0the \u00a0concentration \u00a0levels \u00a0of \u00a0 arsenic \u00a0in \u00a0drinking \u00a0water pumped \u00a0out \u00a0from ground \u00a0 in \u00a0Lahore \u00a0and \u00a0other \u00a0parts \u00a0of \u00a0the \u00a0province, \u00a0Dr \u00a0Bhatti \u00a0emphasised. \u00a0Particularly in Lahore, studies \u00a0have \u00a0shown \u00a0very\u00a0high concentrations in various localities. Meanwhile, in a recent \u00a0study \u00a0by \u00a0the \u00a0Punjab \u00a0Local Government and \u00a0Community \u00a0Development \u00a0 Department, 4,547 drinking \u00a0water samples were collected \u00a0and analysed.<\/p>\n

The outcome \u00a0revealed that arsenic levels \u00a0in \u00a0drinking \u00a0water \u00a0varied \u00a0 but \u00a0were \u00a0below \u00a0the \u00a0WHO \u00a0guideline. \u00a0Former Lahore\u00a0 Development Authority director \u00a0Aslam \u00a0Langah \u00a0said \u00a0 environmental \u00a0risks \u00a0were \u00a0 primarily attributed to urban \u00a0air and water\u00a0 pollution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
