Historical drama \u2018Oppenheimer\u2019<\/em>, one of last year\u2019s highest-earning movies, led nominations for the BAFTA Awards with 13 nods on Thursday, but the omission of some favourites from Britain\u2019s top movie honours surprised fans.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Oppenheimer\u2019<\/em>, about the making of the atomic bomb, was followed by sex-charged gothic comedy \u2018Poor Things\u2019<\/em>, with 11 nominations for the BAFTA Film Awards, which will be handed out at a ceremony next month.<\/p>\n

Martin Scorsese\u2019s \u2018Killers of the Flower Moon\u2019<\/em>, about the murders of members of the Osage Nation in the 1920s, and \u2018The Zone of Interest\u2019<\/em>, which tells the story of a family living next to Auschwitz, both received nine nods.<\/p>\n

\u2018Oppenheimer\u2019<\/em>, \u2018Poor Things\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Killers of the Flower Moon\u2019<\/em> will compete for the top prize, best film, alongside courtroom drama \u2018Anatomy of a Fall\u2019<\/em> and \u2018The Holdovers\u2019<\/em>, a comedy set in a boys\u2019 boarding school.<\/p>\n

Pink-themed phenomenon \u2018Barbie\u2019<\/em>, the highest-grossing film of 2023, missed out in that category but got five nominations overall.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been an outstanding year for film-making as represented by the 38 films nominated today,\u201d Anna Higgs, chair of the BAFTA Film Committee, said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey showcase ambitious, creative and hugely impressive voices from independent British debuts to global blockbusters, from complex moral issues through to joyful journeys of self-discovery. They all ultimately explore human connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

Based on the 2005 biography \u2018American Prometheus\u2019<\/em> by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, \u2018Oppenheimer\u2019<\/em> focuses on J. Robert Oppenheimer, taking audiences back to when the American theoretical physicist oversaw the creation of the atomic bomb during World War II.<\/p>\n

An awards season favourite, it has picked several prizes already, including five Golden Globes.<\/p>\n

Cillian Murphy was recognised in the BAFTA Leading Actor category for his portrayal of Oppenheimer. Fellow cast mates Robert Downey Jr. and Emily Blunt were also nominated in the supporting acting categories. Christopher Nolan was recognised for best director and adapted screenplay.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t be happier that the British Academy recognised so many of my collaborators on \u2018Oppenheimer\u2019<\/em>, especially Chris Nolan,\u201d Murphy said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking on the film was an experience I\u2019ll never forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Poor Things\u2019<\/em> received a leading actress nod for Emma Stone, who has already picked up awards for her performance, as well as recognition in the Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay categories.<\/p>\n

Other leading actress contenders include Margot Robbie for \u2018Barbie\u2019<\/em>, Carey Mulligan for \u2018Maestro\u2019<\/em>, Fantasia Barrino for \u2018The Color Purple\u2019<\/em>, Vivian Oparah for \u2018Rye Lane\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Anatomy of a Fall\u2019<\/em> star Sandra H\u00fcller, who was also nominated in the supporting actress category for \u2018The Zone of Interest\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Golden Globe winner Lily Gladstone, considered a strong contender for the Best Actress Oscar, was not nominated for \u2018Killers of the Flower Moon\u2019<\/em>, neither was Scorsese as director.<\/p>\n

Various media outlets described Gladstone\u2019s omission as a \u2018shock\u2019.<\/p>\n

Alongside Murphy, Bradley Cooper of \u2018Maestro\u2019<\/em>, Barry Keoghan for \u2018Saltburn\u2019<\/em>, Colman Domingo for \u2018Rustin\u2019<\/em>, Paul Giamatti of \u2018The Holdovers\u2019<\/em> and Teo Yoo for \u2018Past Lives\u2019<\/em> make up the leading actor nominees.<\/p>\n

None of the best director contenders has previously won the award, and four out of the six were first-time director nominees: Jonathan Glazer for \u2018The Zone of Interest\u2019<\/em>, Alexander Payne for \u2018The Holdovers\u2019<\/em>, Andrew Haigh for mystery drama \u2018All of Us Strangers\u2019<\/em> and Justine Triet for \u2018Anatomy of a Fall\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Triet is the only woman on the list, with the omission of \u2018Barbie\u2019<\/em> director Greta Gerwig raising some eyebrows.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Barbie\u2019<\/em>\u2018s done incredibly well. It\u2019s brilliant to see Greta nominated for [original] screenplay, for Margot and for Ryan to be nominated,\u201d Sarah Putt, chair of BAFTA, told Reuters, referring to Ryan Gosling\u2019s supporting actor nomination.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very, very competitive year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Known as the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), the awards ceremony takes place in London on February 18.<\/p>\n
