{"id":50338,"date":"2024-01-20T17:49:04","date_gmt":"2024-01-20T17:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/japan-becomes-fifth-state-to-put-probe-on-moon\/"},"modified":"2024-01-20T17:49:04","modified_gmt":"2024-01-20T17:49:04","slug":"japan-becomes-fifth-state-to-put-probe-on-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/japan-becomes-fifth-state-to-put-probe-on-moon\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan becomes fifth state to put probe on moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>TOKYO: Japan became the fifth country to put a spacecraft on the moon on Friday, but the probe was not generating solar power, its space agency said, during a mission to prove a \u201cprecision\u201d landing technology and revitalise a space programme that has suffered setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) landed on the moon\u2019s surface at 1520 GMT and re-established communication with earth, but its solar panels were not able to generate electricity, possibly because they are angled wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe SLIM is now operating only on its battery, and we are prioritising the transfer of its data onto earth,\u201d Hitoshi Kuninaka, the head of JAXA\u2019s research centre, told a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Despite \u201clife-sustaining treatments\u201d such as turning off its heater, SLIM\u2019s battery lasts only for \u201ca few hours\u201d, so JAXA will maintain the status quo rather than take risky actions. The agency hopes a shift in the sunlight\u2019s angle will hit the panels in a way that can restore its functions, Kuninaka said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes 30 days for the solar angle to change on the moon,\u201d Kuninaka said.  \u201cSo when the solar direction changes, and the light shines from a different direction, the light could end up hitting the solar cell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed the  \u201cmoon sniper\u201d, SLIM attempted to land within 100 metres (328 feet) of its target, versus the conventional accuracy of several kilometres, a technology JAXA says will become a powerful tool in future exploration of hilly moon poles seen as a potential source of oxygen, fuel and water.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooking at the trace data, SLIM most certainly achieved a landing with 100-metre accuracy,\u201d Kuninaka said, although adding it will take about a month to verify it.<\/p>\n<p><em>Published in Dawn, January 20th, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO: Japan became the fifth country to put a spacecraft on the moon on Friday, but the probe was not generating solar power, its space agency said, during a mission to prove a \u201cprecision\u201d landing technology and revitalise a space programme that has suffered setbacks.
