{"id":50284,"date":"2024-01-20T14:47:18","date_gmt":"2024-01-20T14:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/nationwide-disruption-to-social-media-platforms-amid-pti-virtual-event-netblocks\/"},"modified":"2024-01-20T14:47:18","modified_gmt":"2024-01-20T14:47:18","slug":"nationwide-disruption-to-social-media-platforms-amid-pti-virtual-event-netblocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/nationwide-disruption-to-social-media-platforms-amid-pti-virtual-event-netblocks\/","title":{"rendered":"Nationwide disruption to social media platforms amid PTI virtual event: Netblocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Internet monitor Netblocks has reported a nationwide disruption to social media platforms on Saturday amid a virtual event organised by the PTI.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConfirmed: Live metrics show a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan, including X\/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube,\u201d the internet tracking agency said at 7:12pm.<\/p>\n<p>It added that \u201cthe incident comes as persecuted opposition leader Imran Khan\u2019s political party, PTI, launches its second virtual gathering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the tracking agency\u2019s confirmation, the PTI said: \u201cShame on the caretakers that are causing damage to Pakistanis only.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The party said its virtual event would begin at 8pm.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1803919\">similar disruption<\/a> occurred on January 7 as the PTI held a virtual fundraising telethon.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1752051\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>When asked for a comment, a spokesperson for the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had told <em>Dawn.com<\/em> that all social media networks were active and the authority had not received any complaints.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1804313\">urged the Supreme Court<\/a> to take notice of the suspension of internet service and blockage of social media websites during the party\u2019s fundraising telethon.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the PTI spokesperson had alleged that 240 million people were deprived of their basic rights by the suspension, which also resulted in financial losses for the country.<\/p>\n<p>Telecom operators had also expres\u00adsed concern over frequent internet outages \u201con political grounds\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned about the matter on Jan 10 by reporters, interim Information Minister Murtaza Solangi had said that such technical problems had occurred in the past as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reasons were technical and had nothing to do with politics,\u201d he had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1804884\">claimed<\/a> and advised reporters to contact the PTA for more details.<\/p>\n<p>Social media platforms were also similarly impacted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1798656\">December 17<\/a> when the PTI held a virtual power show.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Internet monitor Netblocks has reported a nationwide disruption to social media platforms on Saturday amid a virtual event organised by the PTI. \u201cConfirmed: Live metrics show a nation-scale disruption to social media platforms across Pakistan, including X\/Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube,\u201d the internet tracking agency said at 7:12pm.
