{"id":48791,"date":"2024-01-17T00:36:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T00:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/big-win-in-iowa-moves-donald-trump-closer-to-biden-re-match\/"},"modified":"2024-01-17T00:36:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T00:36:00","slug":"big-win-in-iowa-moves-donald-trump-closer-to-biden-re-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/big-win-in-iowa-moves-donald-trump-closer-to-biden-re-match\/","title":{"rendered":"Big win in Iowa moves Donald Trump closer to Biden re-match"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Donald Trump romped to a landslide victory on Monday in Iowa\u2019s caucuses \u2014 the first vote in the US presidential race \u2014 cementing his status as the presumptive Republican standard-bearer to challenge US President Joe Biden in November\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>The former president has led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1786859\">polling<\/a> for more than a year, but the contest offered the clearest insight yet into his ability to convert that advantage into a stunning White House return.<\/p>\n<p>Major US networks took just half an hour to call the race, with Trump taking 51 per cent of the vote and opening an unprecedented 30-point gap over Ron DeSantis \u2014 the biggest victory for an Iowa challenger in modern history.<\/p>\n<p>The Florida governor and Trump\u2019s other main rival \u2014 former UN ambassador Nikki Haley \u2014 were locked at 21 and 19pc respectively, with DeSantis projected to take the runner-up spot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1806213\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cTrump is the dominant candidate (in the Republican Party) and \u2018contest one\u2019 confirms the reality,\u201d Julian E. Zelizer, professor of Public Affairs at Princeton University, told <em>AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>There had been questions whether Trump would be hamstrung by his legal problems, as he faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1804603\">multiple<\/a> civil and criminal trials this year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1779055\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But the extent of his victory demonstrated the 77-year-old\u2019s success in turning his prosecutions into a rallying cry that has galvanised his followers as he takes his momentum into New Hampshire, the next state to nominate, next Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really think this is time now for everybody, the country, to come together,\u201d Trump said in a rambling, uncharacteristically lacklustre victory speech.<\/p>\n<p>Heart doctor Allan Latcham, 62, who voted before heading to Trump\u2019s election party in Des Moines, hailed a \u201cnight for victory,\u201d although he admitted he was surprised by the speed of the result call.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"desantis-weakened\" href=\"#desantis-weakened\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>DeSantis weakened<\/h2>\n<p>Bundled up Iowa residents shuffled into more than 1,600 voting locations, braving sub-zero temperatures in a winter storm that dulled turnout and forced candidates to cancel events at the last minute.<\/p>\n<p>The margin of Trump\u2019s victory was always the main question of the night, with analysts arguing that a gap of more than 30 points, or a voting share upwards of 50pc, would count as a good night.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump machine is better organised than when he lost Iowa in 2016, with boots on the ground across the early nominating states.<\/p>\n<p>A strong showing was seen as essential for DeSantis, who wooed voters in all 99 counties and was hoping to run Trump close and to reel him in later in the year as the former president\u2019s legal woes pile up.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis confirmed that he would stay in the race to \u201creverse the madness that we\u2019ve seen in this country\u201d \u2014 although the governor is considered weak in New Hampshire and many analysts were declaring his campaign all but dead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBig winner tonight? Biden. He\u2019s gonna get the candidate he wants: Trump,\u201d Republican political consultant Mike Madrid posted on social media.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"party-unity\" href=\"#party-unity\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Party unity?<\/h2>\n<p>Haley, the only woman in the Republican contest, was looking to outperform expectations in Iowa and ride into a one-on-one match-up with Trump in her preferred battleground of New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her third-place finish, Haley dismissed DeSantis\u2019s chances of building on his Iowa support level, and she vowed to avert the \u201cnightmare\u201d of a Trump-Biden rematch by winning in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p>Trump aides have been clear they want to see off the competition long before the Republican National Convention in July \u2014 and are keen for the party to coalesce around the front-runner before multiple expected court dates.<\/p>\n<p>But some Republican voters said they could not back another Trump presidency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can hardly even think about it. He\u2019s a mess. An embarrassment,\u201d said Heather Jacobus, who voted for Haley in Des Moines.<\/p>\n<p>The Iowa contest featured some low-polling candidates too, including biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who dropped out and endorsed Trump after finishing in single digits.<\/p>\n<p>Caucuses were also being held by Iowa\u2019s Democrats, along with voting by mail until March, with Biden facing two challengers but no serious threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLooks like Donald Trump just won Iowa.
