\u2018Oppenheimer<\/em>,\u2019 Christopher Nolan\u2019s epic movie about the creation of the atomic bomb, cleaned up at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, winning best picture and seven other prizes over its rivals as the Oscars race heats up.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The $1 billion-grossing movie, now the clear frontrunner for the Academy Awards in March, also won for best director, supporting actor, cinematography, score, ensemble, editing, and visual effects.<\/p>\n

Collecting his prize for directing, Nolan thanked the critics who \u201chelped with convincing mainstream audiences that a film about quantum physics and apocalypse could be worth their time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robert Downey Jr. thanked his fellow \u201cOppenhomies’\u201d as he followed up his Golden Globe win with another best-supporting actor prize.<\/p>\n

Despite the dominance of \u2018Oppenheimer<\/em>,\u2019 the remaining acting categories rewarded other films at the gala \u2014 one of a raft of major awards shows in the run-up to the Academy Awards, which take place this year on March 10.<\/p>\n

Emma Stone won best actress for \u2018Poor Things<\/em>,\u2019 a surreal dark comedy in which she plays a Victorian reanimated corpse with the brain of an infant, who gradually learns about the world but refuses to pander to its social mores and hierarchies.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlaying Bella was one of the greatest joys of my life. I got to unlearn a lot of things in playing her \u2014 unlearn parts of shame, and societal stuff that gets put on us,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m very grateful to the critics\u2026 but I\u2019m just learning not to care what you think,\u201d Emma Stone joked.<\/p>\n

The award is her latest after she won at last weekend\u2019s Globes \u2014 as did Paul Giamatti, who famously celebrated his victory by taking a late-night trip with his trophy to a popular fast-food chain in California.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t think my week could get any better than going viral for eating a cheeseburger,\u201d joked Giamatti as he won the best actor trophy for 1970s-set prep school comedy \u2018The Holdovers<\/em>.\u2019 \u201cIt\u2019s a good story about people connecting in divisive times. So thank you for helping get it out to audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

The win puts the veteran actor, known for hits like \u2018Sideways<\/em>,\u2019 head-to-head with Cillian Murphy, who portrays J. Robert Oppenheimer in Nolan\u2019s biopic, for the Oscars race.<\/p>\n

Fellow \u2018Holdovers<\/em>\u2018 star Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph consolidated her position as this year\u2019s best supporting actress with her latest win for her portrayal of the school\u2019s grieving cook.<\/p>\n

The Critics Choice Awards \u2014 chosen by almost 600 members of North America\u2019s largest critics organization \u2014 laid out a red carpet and lavish gala at a former airport hangar in Los Angeles for Hollywood A-listers.<\/p>\n

Although \u2018Barbie<\/em>\u2018 \u2014 the other half of last summer\u2019s \u2018Barbenheimer<\/em>\u2018 box office phenomenon \u2014 has so far failed to capture top prizes this awards season, it was showered with honours in a range of other categories.<\/p>\n

The film won for best comedy, original screenplay, song, production design, costume, and hair and makeup.<\/p>\n

French courtroom drama \u2018Anatomy of a Fall<\/em>\u2018 won for best foreign-language film, and \u2018Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse<\/em>\u2018 was named best-animated movie.<\/p>\n

\u2018American Fiction<\/em>\u2018 won Best Adapted Screenplay, while Harrison Ford accepted a career achievement award at the gala, hosted by comedian Chelsea Handler.<\/p>\n
