Postponed by four months because of Hollywood strikes, the Emmy Awards will finally celebrate television\u2019s best and brightest on Monday, with the last season of HBO\u2019s \u2018Succession<\/em>\u2018 tipped to scoop the night\u2019s top prizes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The small screen\u2019s equivalent of the Oscars typically takes place in September, but organizers opted for an unusual January slot this time around, correctly gambling that the entertainment industry walkouts would be over, and that stars would be free to walk the red carpet again.<\/p>\n

Votes were cast back in the summer, and some of the nominated shows premiered as long as 18 months ago \u2014 but there still seems little doubt that the fictional Roy family from \u2018Succession<\/em>\u2018 will be making plenty of visits to the stage.<\/p>\n

\n<\/blockquote>\n

The critically adored show charting the back-stabbing dynastic squabbles of an ultra-wealthy family has a whopping 27 nominations. It is the frontrunner for six awards including best drama, which it has won twice previously.<\/p>\n

\u2018Succession<\/em>\u2018 has a record three of the six nominees for best actor in a drama \u2014 Kieran Culkin, Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox \u2014 while Sarah Snook is expected to win the best actress prize.<\/p>\n

Matthew Macfadyen \u2014 her husband on the show \u2014 should seal the fictional family\u2019s grip on the Emmys with the best supporting actor statuette.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the two TV dramas that will feel most aggrieved to come up against the \u2018Succession\u2019 swan song are \u2018The Last of Us<\/em>\u2018 and \u2018The White Lotus<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n

Arguably the best video game adaptation ever to grace the small screen, \u2018The Last of Us<\/em>\u2018 may leave the gala on Monday empty-handed unless its stars Pedro Pascal or Bella Ramsey can spring a surprise.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, \u2018The White Lotus<\/em>,\u2019 a stylish satire on wealth and hypocrisy, returns to the Emmys with a second season set in Sicily. Jennifer Coolidge, the sole returning star from the first Hawaii-set season, is a clear frontrunner for best actress.<\/p>\n

Vintage comedy<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Emmys\u2019 delay to January is unlikely to help a gala that has been locked in a downward spiral with TV audiences for years.<\/p>\n

Last year\u2019s telecast was watched by just 5.9 million \u2014 lower even than the 2020 \u201cpandEmmys\u201d lockdown edition that was broadcast from an empty theater.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s strike-induced postponement puts the Emmys smack in the middle of Hollywood\u2019s film awards season, starving the show of considerable publicity.<\/p>\n

Host Anthony Anderson may need to do some heavy lifting to overcome audience confusion about honouring seasons of shows that aired months before.<\/p>\n

Most notably, \u2018The Bear<\/em>\u2018 \u2014 which took viewers behind the scenes of a dysfunctional Chicago restaurant \u2014 is a hot favourite for the comedy prizes.<\/p>\n

But Monday\u2019s ceremony is a belated chance for Emmys voters to honour the show\u2019s intense debut season, which premiered way back in June 2022.<\/p>\n

Should they lose out, stars like Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach or Ayo Edebiri will have another chance at the next Emmys ceremony, taking place this September, for which the show\u2019s even more acclaimed and ambitious second season is eligible.<\/p>\n

The same is not true for the stars of \u201cTed Lasso,\u201d a prolific former Emmy winner that will have its last tilt at glory Monday for its underwhelming final season.<\/p>\n

\u201cJoin me as we celebrate the six shows you watched, the 48 you haven\u2019t, and the 130 you\u2019ve never heard of,\u201d Anderson quipped in a promo on social media.<\/p>\n

Limited series<\/strong><\/p>\n

The always competitive limited series categories, for shows that run only a single season, should be more straightforward to follow.<\/p>\n

Netflix\u2019s \u2018Beef<\/em>\u2018 and \u2018Dahmer \u2014 Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story<\/em>\u2018 led the category with 13 nods apiece.<\/p>\n

\n<\/blockquote>\n

Both are tipped by pundits to be rewarded, with Ali Wong a popular choice as a road-rage driver in \u2018Beef<\/em>,\u2019 and Evan Peters too terrifying to ignore as notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.<\/p>\n

Other standouts in this section are Hollywood A-lister Jessica Chastain in the country music biopic \u2018George and Tammy<\/em>,\u2019 and Paul Walter Hauser in \u2018Black Bird<\/em>,\u2019 another dark true crime series.<\/p>\n
