{"id":46777,"date":"2024-01-11T23:49:05","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T23:49:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/israel-army-claims-2-journalists-killed-in-gaza-strike-were-terror-operatives\/"},"modified":"2024-01-11T23:49:05","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T23:49:05","slug":"israel-army-claims-2-journalists-killed-in-gaza-strike-were-terror-operatives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/israel-army-claims-2-journalists-killed-in-gaza-strike-were-terror-operatives\/","title":{"rendered":"Israel army claims 2 journalists killed in Gaza strike were \u2018terror operatives\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Israel\u2019s army claimed on Wednesday that two <em>Al Jazeera<\/em> journalists it killed in an air strike in Gaza were \u201cterror operatives\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hamza Wael Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuria, who also worked as a video stringer for <em>AFP<\/em> and other news organisations, were killed on Sunday while they were on an assignment for the Qatar-based channel in the city of Rafah.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1803915\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The army said in a statement on Wednesday its \u201cintelligence has confirmed that both the deceased were members of Gaza-based terrorist organisations actively involved in attacks against IDF (army) forces\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrior to the strike, the two operated drones, posing an imminent threat to IDF troops,\u201d the army said.<\/p>\n<p>There was no immediate reaction available from the television channel and families of the two men.<\/p>\n<p>When asked on Wednesday by <em>AFP<\/em> about what kind of drones were used by the two men and the nature of the threat the drones posed to Israeli troops, the army said it was \u201cchecking\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It said Thuria was identified in a document found by troops in Gaza to be a member of Hamas\u2019 Gaza City Brigade, while Dahdouh was identified as a \u201cterrorist\u201d belonging to Islamic Jihad.<\/p>\n<p>The army statement included a copy of a document it said was a list of \u201coperatives from an electronic engineering unit of the Islamic Jihad, including Dahdouh and his military number\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1799043\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Dahdouh and Thuria were killed when the car they were travelling in was hit by two rockets on a street in Rafah, according to witnesses. A third journalist and the driver of the car were wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Thuria, in his 30s, had contributed for <em>AFP<\/em> since 2019 and had also worked with other international media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>He and Dahdouh had been tasked with filming the aftermath of a strike on a house in Rafah and their car was hit while they were on their way back, <em>AFP<\/em> correspondents said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after the strike, <em>Al Jazeera<\/em> said it \u201cstrongly condemns the Israeli occupation forces\u2019 targeting of the Palestinian journalists\u2019 car\u201d, accusing Israel of \u201ctargeting\u201d journalists and \u201cviolating the principles of freedom of the press\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a brief statement, Hamas\u2019 press office said the army\u2019s claims were false and that Israel \u201ccreates false pretexts to justify its massacres and crimes against Palestinian civilians and journalists\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hamza\u2019s father Wael Al-Dahdouh is <em>Al Jazeera\u2019s<\/em> Gaza bureau chief, and was recently wounded in a strike himself after his wife and two other children were killed in Israeli bombardment in the initial weeks of the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after Dahdouh and Thuria were killed, US State Secretary Antony Blinken said that their deaths were an \u201cunimaginable tragedy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s also been the case for [\u2026] far too many innocent Palestinian men, women and children,\u201d Blinken said.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Wael\u2019s two nephews Ahmed Al-Dahdouh and Muhammad Al-Dahdouh were also killed in a strike when travelling in a car in Rafah, according to the health ministry in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting in Gaza erupted when Hamas stormed across Gaza\u2019s border into Israel in an unprecedented attack on October 7 which left some 1,140 people dead, mostly civilians, according to an <em>AFP<\/em> tally based on official Israeli figures.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has vowed to eradicate Hamas and has kept up a relentless bombing of Gaza, which the health ministry says has killed at least 23,357 people, mostly civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The New York-based <em>Committee to Protect Journalists<\/em> says at least 79 journalists and media professionals, the vast majority Palestinian, have been killed since the conflict began.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Israel\u2019s army claimed on Wednesday that two Al Jazeera journalists it killed in an air strike in Gaza were \u201cterror operatives\u201d.
