As Martin Scorsese revels in the acclaim for his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>, the esteemed filmmaker is already offering a glimpse into his next potential project. In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times<\/a>, Scorsese disclosed plans for a new religious film based on Sh\u016bsaku End\u014d\u2019s book, A Life of Jesus.<\/em><\/p>\n

“I\u2019m trying to find a new way to make it more accessible and take away the negative onus of what has been associated with organised religion,” Scorsese explained. The 80-year-old filmmaker insisted on reconsidering religion’s initial impulse without dismissing it outright.<\/p>\n

He furthered on, \u201cLet\u2019s get back. Let\u2019s just think about it. You may reject it. But it might make a difference in how you live your life \u2014 even in rejecting it. Don\u2019t dismiss it offhand. That\u2019s all I\u2019m talking about. And I\u2019m saying that as a person who\u2019s going to be 81 in a couple of days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unlike his previous ventures into religious cinema with the 1988 release,The Last Temptation of Christ<\/em>, Scorsese envisions this film to be predominantly set in the present day, aiming for a timeless quality rather than being confined to a specific era. Running at approximately 80 minutes, the upcoming film will be a major departure from the nearly three-and-a-half-hour runtime of Flower Moon<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As per The LA Times<\/em>, Scorsese will delve into Jesus’ fundamental teachings without engaging in \u201cproselytisation.\u201d While little is known about the plot and casting yet, fans can expect the project to pick up pace, owing to the auteur\u2019s unassailable spirit. Collaborating with critic and filmmaker Kent Jones, Scorsese has completed the screenplay and plans to begin shooting the film later this year.<\/p>\n

As the filmmaker jumps from Flower Moon<\/em> to this new passion project, the fate of another film in the maestro’s pipeline hangs in the balance. Based on David Grann’s nonfiction book, The Wager<\/em> was announced by Apple Original Films in July 2022, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as lead. However, production has yet to kick off.<\/p>\n

The decision to put a hold on The Wager<\/em> was made public in October, stemming from Scorsese\u2019s commitment to addressing the post-writer’s strike landscape and ensuring the success of his latest cinematic offering. In conversation with IndieWire<\/em>, the director announced a brief pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, the issue is now that the writer\u2019s strike is over, and because so much is on me to go out there and spread the word about Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>, let me take a break,\u201d Scorsese admitted. \u201cWe\u2019ll get working with writers and see if we get it on the page. And maybe it\u2019s something I could co-direct, so to speak. It\u2019ll be difficult. But there are ways now, with certain technical things we could do, to make it bearable. Depending on how we get the script together.\u201d<\/p>\n
