United States to stop providing military aid, days ahead of a crucial election on the self-ruled island.<\/p>\n<p>China claims Taiwan, which holds elections on Saturday, as part of its territory and has vowed to seize it one day.<\/p>\n<p>The election is being closely watched \u2014 including by policymakers in Beijing and Washington \u2014 as its outcome will impact the future of Taiwan\u2019s relations with an increasingly assertive China.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In their first defence talks of the year, held at the Pentagon on Monday and Tuesday, Chinese officials demanded that Washington \u201cstop arming Taiwan, and oppose Taiwan\u2019s \u2018independence\u2019\u201d, according to a Chinese defence ministry readout.<\/p>\n<p>The officials said Beijing would \u201cnever compromise or back down\u201d on the territory\u2019s status, the readout said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Pentagon\u2019s readout on Tuesday, the United States reaffirmed its calls for \u201cpeace and stability\u201d across the Taiwan Strait that separates Taiwan from China.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Chase, the Pentagon\u2019s deputy assistant secretary for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, restated the United States\u2019 commitment to its \u201cOne China\u201d policy, which emphasises it does not support Taiwanese independence.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has provided Taiwan with military aid under an assistance programme aimed at foreign governments, prompting frequent criticism from Beijing.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"open-lines\" href=\"#open-lines\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Open lines\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1789856\">agreed<\/a> in November to restart military talks between the two countries, after being put on hold for more than a year.<\/p>\n<p>Relations between Beijing and Washington had nosedived in recent years on flashpoint issues from technology and trade to human rights, but the two presidents described their November meeting as a success.<\/p>\n<p>However key sources of friction remain, including the status of Taiwan and the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost in its entirety despite an international tribunal ruling that its assertions have no legal basis.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest defence talks, the two sides also discussed the crucial waterway, where the two powers last week held rival drills, and which has seen a spate of standoffs between Beijing and Manila in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>China frequently deploys boats to patrol the South China Sea and has built artificial islands that it has militarised to reinforce its claims.<\/p>\n<p>According to the readout from Beijing, the Chinese officials urged their US counterparts to stop their \u201cprovocative actions\u201d in the waterway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States should fully understand the root causes of maritime and air security issues, strictly rein in its frontline troops, and stop with the exaggeration and hype,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>Washington, in response, asserted its belief in the \u201cimportance of respect for high seas freedom of navigation\u201d in light of \u201crepeated\u201d Chinese \u201charassment against lawfully operating Philippine vessels in the South China Sea\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The United States would \u201ccontinue to fly, sail, and operate safely and responsibly wherever international law allows\u201d, Chase said.<\/p>\n<p>Washington\u2019s readout said Major General Song Yanchao led Beijing\u2019s delegation, though the Chinese readout gave no names.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing meanwhile told the United States it was willing to \u201cdevelop healthy and stable military-to-military relations with the United States\u201d, the Chinese side said.<\/p>\n<p>But it stressed the United States must \u201cface China\u2019s concerns squarely and take more actions that are conducive to the development of relations between the two militaries\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The US side, in turn, stressed the importance of \u201cmaintaining open lines of military-to-military communication\u201d, according to the Pentagon\u2019s readout, \u201cto
