{"id":44739,"date":"2024-01-06T23:47:04","date_gmt":"2024-01-06T23:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/14-environmental-samples-tested-positive-for-poliovirus\/"},"modified":"2024-01-06T23:47:04","modified_gmt":"2024-01-06T23:47:04","slug":"14-environmental-samples-tested-positive-for-poliovirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/14-environmental-samples-tested-positive-for-poliovirus\/","title":{"rendered":"14 environmental samples tested positive for poliovirus"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-td-block-uid=\"tdi_86\">\n<div class=\"tdb-block-inner td-fix-index\">\n<p><strong>ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Health on Saturday said that at least 14 environmental samples have tested positive for wild poliovirus in the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health, the virus was isolated from three sewage samples.<\/p>\n<p>These samples were collected between December 4 and 13 from Peshawar, two from Hyderabad, two from Karachi East, and one sample each from Karachi Central, Karachi Keamari, Karachi West, Sukkur, Quetta, Kohat and Islamabad.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said that only regular immunization can protect children from poliovirus, urging parents to administer anti-polio drops to their children during every polio vaccination campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Jan 2, the Health Ministry confirmed presence of the polio virus in environmental samples from four districts of the country \u2013 Karachi Kemari, Hyderabad, Chaman, and Peshawar.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said that Pakistan has the most extensive and sensitive polio surveillance system in the world. He added that polio surveillance systems lead to rapid virus confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Islamabad reported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arynews.tv\/pakistan-reports-sixth-polio-case-of-2023\/\">six polio cases<\/a>\u00a0as Pakistan and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/4s9YZdeETfE\">Afghanistan<\/a>\u00a0remained the only two countries in the world where polio remains endemic.<\/p>\n<p>In Dec 2023, a nine-month-old child in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa\u2019s Orakzai district became the latest victim of the crippling disease.
