{"id":41892,"date":"2023-12-30T21:18:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-30T21:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/islamabad-turns-down-indian-call-to-hand-over-hafiz-saeed\/"},"modified":"2023-12-30T21:18:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-30T21:18:09","slug":"islamabad-turns-down-indian-call-to-hand-over-hafiz-saeed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/islamabad-turns-down-indian-call-to-hand-over-hafiz-saeed\/","title":{"rendered":"Islamabad turns down Indian call to hand over Hafiz Saeed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office on Friday officially declined India\u2019s demand for the extradition of Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed after New Delhi announced it had formally requested Islamabad to extradite him in a money laundering case.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to media inquiries about India\u2019s extradition request, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch pointed out that \u201cno bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistan and India\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Saeed is currently serving a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1684132\">jail sentence<\/a> after being convicted of terror financing in multiple cases. He has received various prison sentences, ranging from over 15 to 31 years.<\/p>\n<p>Although India accuses him of being behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks, Saeed has denied any involvement.<\/p>\n<p>He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1494606\">arrested<\/a> in 2019 when Pakistan was struggling to get out of the Financial Action Task Force\u2019s grey list comprising countries with strategic deficiencies in their anti-money laundering (AML), counter-terrorism financing (CFT), and proliferation financing regimes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"blockquote-level-1\">\n<p>FO says no extradition treaty exists between both countries; New Delhi\u2019s request follows Chinese reprimand over \u2018double standards\u2019 on terrorism<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2012, the United States announced a $10 million bounty on Saeed. Both the Lashkar-e-Taiba and JuD are banned entities in the US and under UN sanctions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1533015\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Earlier on Friday, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for India\u2019s External Affairs Ministry, emphasised at a media briefing in New Delhi that the extradition request, delivered last week via the Indian high commission in Islamabad, was accompanied by relevant documentation.<\/p>\n<p>However, he acknowledged that the request for Saeed\u2019s transfer to India to stand trial was made despite the lack of an extradition treaty with Islamabad.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Chinese reprimand\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s revelation of the request followed a Chinese reprimand, on Wednesday, of New Delhi\u2019s \u201cdouble standards\u201d in dealing with terrorism.<\/p>\n<p>It was referring to Pakistani reports of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1799422\">Baloch rebel\u2019s surrender<\/a> and his naming of India as the sponsor of the group\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said such a posture \u201cbenefits no one\u201d and comes at the \u201cexpense of international and regional security and will only backfire\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reports said Mao\u2019s comments came in response to claims by a former Pakistani militant commander, Sarfraz Bangulzai, of the banned militant organisation Baloch National Army, according to a transcript of a news conference released by the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>She told reporters in Beijing: \u201cTo support and use terrorist groups and let them thrive out of one\u2019s selfish interests at the expense of international and regional security benefits no one and will only backfire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina stands for strengthening counterterrorism cooperation among all countries to jointly fight all forms of terrorism,\u201d stressed Mao.<\/p>\n<p>She was responding to a question by the <em>China Daily<\/em> newspaper that India \u201chas been secretly supporting terrorist activities in Balochistan and financing Balochistan separatist forces\u201d as alleged by Bangulzai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina firmly opposes double standards on counterterrorism.
