A Qatar court has dropped the death sentence imposed on eight Indian former naval officers arrested there last year, India\u2019s foreign ministry said on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The eight men, who were condemned<\/a> to death in October, were accused of spying for Israel according to sources \u2014 though India and Qatar have not confirmed the charges.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s foreign ministry did not say what new sentence or penalty the men would now face.<\/p>\n

It \u201cnoted the verdict today of the Court of Appeal of Qatar\u201d in which the sentences \u201chave been reduced\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in close touch with the legal team as well as the family members to decide on the next steps,\u201d and will \u201ccontinue to take up the matter with the Qatari authorities,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n

It declined to comment on the case further \u201cdue to the confidential and sensitive nature of proceedings\u201d.<\/p>\n

Qatar and Israel\u2019s embassies in New Delhi did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n

India had expressed shock when Qatar\u2019s Court of First Instance imposed the death penalty on the eight men who were working on a submarine project with a private company for the Qatari authorities.<\/p>\n

It had said the country would \u201cmake all efforts\u201d to secure<\/a> the release of the eight ex-navy personnel.<\/p>\n

More than 800,000 Indian citizens live and work in Qatar, which is also a significant provider of natural gas for India.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
