Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned Israel on Wednesday that it or its allied groups would take \u201cdirect\u201d action to avenge the killing of senior commander Razi Moussavi<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The general was killed on Monday in an Israeli missile strike near the Syrian capital, according to state media, at a time of heightened regional tensions around the Israel-Hamas fighting raging in Gaza.<\/p>\n

The Israeli army, which has launched hundreds of strikes on Iran-linked targets<\/a> in war-torn Syria in recent years, said only that it does not comment on foreign media reports.<\/p>\n

The body of Moussavi, a commander in the Guards\u2019 foreign operations arm the Quds Force, was taken to Iraq for funeral rites in holy sites a day ahead of his burial in Iran planned for Thursday.<\/p>\n

IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif warned that \u201cour response to Moussavi\u2019s assassination will be a combination of direct action as well as [from] others led by the Axis of Resistance,\u201d the local Mehr<\/em> news agency reported.<\/p>\n

Sharif charged that the Israeli killing of the general near Damascus \u201cwas likely due to its failures after the \u2018Operation Al-Aqsa Flood\u2019\u201d \u2014 a reference to the October 7 surprise attack<\/a> Hamas launched against Israel.<\/p>\n

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,140 people in Israel, most of them civilians, according to an AFP<\/em> tally based on the latest official Israeli figures, and saw around 250 people taken hostage.<\/p>\n

Israel retaliated with a relentless bombardment and ground invasion that have killed at least 21,110 people, according to Gaza\u2019s health ministry.<\/p>\n

\u2018List of crimes\u2019<\/h2>\n

The Gaza crisis has reverberated across the Middle East, drawing in armed groups backed by Israel\u2019s arch foe Iran in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.
\nIran, which supports Hamas financially and militarily, has hailed the attacks as a \u201csuccess\u201d but denied any direct involvement.<\/p>\n

President Ebrahim Raisi has said Iran sees it as \u201cits duty to support the resistance groups\u201d but insisted that they \u201care independent in their opinion, decision and action\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sharif claimed Moussavi\u2019s killing was an Israeli attempt \u201cto expand the war to other geographical areas\u201d.<\/p>\n

In Iraq, hundreds of mourners flocked today to attend memorial prayers for Moussavi, whose coffin was taken to the Imam Ali shrine in the city of Najaf.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmerica is the enemy of God,\u201d some of them chanted.<\/p>\n

The pallbearers included members of the Hashed al-Shaabi, mainly pro-Iranian former paramilitary units that have been integrated into Iraq\u2019s regular armed forces.<\/p>\n

His remains were then taken to Karbala ahead of his repatriation to Iran.<\/p>\n
