{"id":38178,"date":"2023-12-21T17:18:55","date_gmt":"2023-12-21T17:18:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/pakistan-born-aussie-batter-usman-khawaja-reprimanded-by-icc-for-wearing-black-armband-in-gaza-protest\/"},"modified":"2023-12-21T17:18:55","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T17:18:55","slug":"pakistan-born-aussie-batter-usman-khawaja-reprimanded-by-icc-for-wearing-black-armband-in-gaza-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/pakistan-born-aussie-batter-usman-khawaja-reprimanded-by-icc-for-wearing-black-armband-in-gaza-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Pakistan-born Aussie batter Usman Khawaja reprimanded by ICC for wearing black armband in Gaza protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Pakistan-born Aussie batter Usman Khawaja was reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday for sporting a black armband after the global body\u2019s rules prevented him from wearing shoes with messages of support for Gaza in a Test against Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>Khawaja had the messages \u201cFreedom is a human right\u201d and \u201cAll lives are equal\u201d on his boots in the colours of the Palestinian flag during training before the opening test of the three-match series last week, which the hosts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1798605\">won<\/a> by 360 runs in Perth.<\/p>\n<p>The Pakistan-born opener intended to wear the boots in the game, according to Australian media reports, but was unable to do so under ICC regulations that prohibit messages related to political, religious or racial activities or causes.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--left  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1797543\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>He instead wore a black armband and the ICC said he was in breach of its Clothing and Equipment Regulations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsman displayed a personal message (armband) during the first Test match against Pakistan without seeking the prior approval of Cricket Australia and the ICC to display it, as required in the regulations for personal messages,\u201d an ICC spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a breach under the category of an \u2018other breach\u2019 and the sanction for a first offence is a reprimand,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Khawaja, who scored 41 and 90 in the first Test, had said he believed the statements on his shoes in support of the people of Gaza were not political and vowed to fight the ICC.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s ongoing assault on Gaza in response to the October 7 cross-border attack by Hamas has killed thousands of Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>England all-rounder Moeen Ali, who like Khawaja is a Muslim with Pakistani heritage, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1122328\">banned<\/a> by the ICC in 2014 from wearing wristbands featuring the slogans \u201cSave Gaza\u201d and \u201cFree Palestine\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ICC did, however, allow players to \u201ctake the knee\u201d before international matches in support of the \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d movement in 2020 and 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The second Test begins on Dec 26.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pakistan-born Aussie batter Usman Khawaja was reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday for sporting a black armband after the global body\u2019s rules prevented him from wearing shoes with messages of support for Gaza in a Test against Pakistan.
