Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar said on Wednesday that the decision to handcuff PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif upon his return to the country lied within the purview of law enforcement agencies (LEAs), who would make the decision according to the applicable legal provisions.<\/p>\n
A day ago in London, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif had announced<\/a> that his brother would return to the country on October 21. Nawaz was convicted<\/a> in the Al-Azizia Mills and Avenfield corruption cases in 2018. The cases are still sub-judice.<\/p>\n Nawaz had left the country<\/a> in November 2019 on medical grounds following his conviction<\/a> but never returned. His departure took place approximately 20 days after the Islamabad High Court\u2019s order, which had granted him temporary relief<\/a> on medical grounds in the Al Azizia case.<\/p>\n In Feb 2020, the then government had declared him an absconder<\/a>, and later in the same year, an accountability court had declared him a proclaimed offender<\/a> in the Toshakhana vehicles reference.<\/p>\n On August 10, Shehbaz was asked about the possibility of the caretaker government \u201ccreating any issues\u201d for Nawaz upon his return, to which he had replied that the elder Sharif would \u201cface the law\u201d<\/a>. \u201cNawaz Sharif will, God willing, come to Pakistan and face the law, there are no two opinions on it,\u201d the PML-N president had said in London later in August<\/a>.<\/p>\n Today, when questioned about the issue in an interview on Samaa TV<\/em> show Nadeem Malik Live<\/em> and whether the PML-N supremo would be handcuffed or not on his return, PM Kakar said: \u201cThe law enforcement agencies (LEAs) will decide this matter in light of the law. If they think he (Nawaz) should be chained then they will adopt that path and vice versa.\u201d<\/p>\n He said this was the discretion that the leadership of LEAs exercised, adding that he hoped \u201cthey do it to the best of their ability\u201d.<\/p>\n
