A man jumped into the lawmakers\u2019 area of India\u2019s parliament, shouted slogans and set off a smoke can on Wednesday, in a major security breach on the 22nd anniversary of a deadly attack on the complex.<\/p>\n
The parliament TV channel showed a young man wearing a black jacket and dark trousers jump from the visitors\u2019 gallery into the lawmakers\u2019 seating area in the lower house while a member was speaking, climbing over tables and entering the aisles.<\/p>\n
He was surrounded by security staff and lawmakers and caught in an aisle as he set off a smoke can in his shoes, releasing dense white and yellow smoke, lawmakers said.<\/p>\n
Four people, including the man, were arrested, authorities said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt all happened in half a minute or one minute,\u201d Rajendra Agarwal, a lawmaker from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party who was presiding over the house, told CNN News 18<\/em> TV channel, adding he saw a second person in the visitors\u2019 gallery also trying to jump into the lawmakers\u2019 area.<\/p>\n \u201cThere is no doubt it was a major security lapse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Lawmakers said the intruder shouted slogans they could not make out and there was a sound and some smoke.<\/p>\n Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not in parliament at the time.<\/p>\n \u201cI was expecting maybe they will blast something, shoot somewhere,\u201d Sudip Bandyopadhyay, a Trinamool Congress party lawmaker, told the ANI<\/em> news agency in which Reuters<\/em> has a minority stake.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a serious security lapse. How did they enter [\u2026] releasing smoke, sound,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The lower house stopped proceedings soon after the incident but resumed business about an hour later.<\/p>\n Speaker Om Birla told members that investigations found that the smoke released by the man was \u201cordinary smoke, just to cause sensation\u201d.<\/p>\n Two people were arrested from inside the building and two from outside the complex, he said.<\/p>\n There was no statement from the government or law enforcement agencies.<\/p>\n Lawmakers shaken<\/h2>\n
