The European Parliament on Tuesday presented a top EU rights prize to Mahsa Amini, whose death<\/a> in Iranian custody sparked mass protests, but her family was blocked<\/a> by Tehran from attending.<\/p>\n

The award \u2014 also for the broader \u201cWoman, Life, Freedom\u201d movement \u2014 is the latest international recognition for the women challenging Iran\u2019s religious government after jailed activist Narges Mohammadi was given the Nobel Peace Prize<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Amini\u2019s mother, father and brother missed the ceremony at the parliament in the French city of Strasbourg after Iran\u2019s authorities confiscated their passports and barred them from flying to collect the EU\u2019s Sakharov Prize.<\/p>\n

In a speech read out by the family\u2019s lawyer, Amini\u2019s mother Mojgan Eftekhari said they were denied the opportunity to attend \u201cin violation of all legal and human standards\u201d.<\/p>\n

She said her daughter\u2019s name \u201cbecame a secret code for freedom and spread the dream of liberty from her birthplace, Kurdistan, all over Iran, the Middle East and the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer life was taken unjustly, they believed that by taking her life, they would stop her from being and becoming,\u201d said the speech, read out by lawyer Saleh Nikbakht.<\/p>\n

Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, died on September 16, 2022, while being held by Iran\u2019s religious police for allegedly breaching the Islamic Republic\u2019s strict dress code for women.<\/p>\n

Her death triggered major protests in Iran and a global movement known as \u201cWoman, Life, Freedom\u201d, calling for the end of the cleric-led government in Tehran and its imposition of headscarves on women.<\/p>\n

Iranian security forces have cracked down<\/a> on the protests domestically, killing hundreds and have executed dozens for allegedly participating in what officials have termed \u201criots\u201d.<\/p>\n

The refusal by Iran\u2019s government to let Amini\u2019s family attend has caused outrage among EU lawmakers, who said Tehran is seeking to stifle her supporters.<\/p>\n

\u2018Cannot be silenced\u2019<\/h2>\n

\u201cThat treatment is another example of what the people of Iran face every day,\u201d European Parliament president Roberta Metsola said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet me say that the courage and resilience of Iranian women in their fight for justice, liberty, and human rights will not be stopped. Their voices cannot be silenced and while they are not here today, their presence will be felt.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Amini family lawyer Nikbakht \u2014 who is appealing a one-year jail sentence in Iran \u2014 told AFP<\/em> he feared being detained immediately upon his return to the country.<\/p>\n

Two prominent activists living in exile outside Iran, Afsoon Najafi and Mersedeh Shahinkar, picked up the award in the name of the broader movement.<\/p>\n

Najafi\u2019s sister died during the anti-government protests<\/a> that swept Iran in the wake of Amini\u2019s death. Shahinkar was shot in the eye by the country\u2019s security forces.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are standing here on behalf of all the women and we are tired of the regime of Iran,\u201d Shahinkar told a press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic is not representative of the Iranian people. I and the people who protest are the sound and the voices of Iranian people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EU has imposed sanctions on scores of Iranian officials over the repression of the demonstrators.<\/p>\n

Najafi said there are many Iranians who are still \u201csuffering and tortured\u201d by the authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Islamic Republic by putting pressure on Iranian people do not let them do anything,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She called for the international community to further make the authorities in Tehran pariahs for their treatment of the protests.<\/p>\n
