\u2018Barbie<\/em>\u2018 and \u2018Oppenheimer<\/em>\u2018 \u2014 the unlikely pair of films that dominated the box office and spawned countless internet memes this summer \u2014 topped the newly revamped Golden Globes nominations Monday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Barbie<\/em>\u2018 \u2014 a vivid feminist satire about the all-conquering line of plastic dolls \u2014 claimed nine nods, including best comedy as well as acting nominations for stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s top-grossing movie, earning more than $1.4 billion globally, \u2018Barbie<\/em>\u2018 also scooped a whopping three best song nominations, and recognition for its writer-director Greta Gerwig.<\/p>\n

\u2018Oppenheimer<\/em>,\u2019 Christopher Nolan\u2019s critically adored film about the inventor of the nuclear bomb, took eight nominations, including best drama and best director.<\/p>\n

Cast members including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr all received nods.<\/p>\n

The two blockbusters \u2014 collectively dubbed \u2018Barbenheimer<\/em>\u2018 after their theatrical releases happened to fall on the same date \u2014 now have a strong start to Hollywood\u2019s film awards season, which ends with the Oscars in March.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing that they maintained that momentum,\u201d said the Globes\u2019 new executive vice president Tim Gray. \u201cLast July, people were exclaiming about how popular they are, but I think nobody was confident that they were going to dominate the awards. But they did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other movies that proved popular with Globes voters were \u2018Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>\u2018 and \u2018Poor Things<\/em>,\u2019 both earning seven nominations, and \u2018Past Lives\u2019 with five.<\/p>\n

Globes organizers will hope the \u2018Barbenheimer<\/em>\u2018 success can shift the focus away from the gala\u2019s recent notoriety.<\/p>\n

The Golden Globes have endured a rough few years, after a Los Angeles Times expose in 2021 showed that the awards\u2019 voting body \u2014 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association \u2014 had no Black members.<\/p>\n

That revelation triggered the airing of a wide range of other long-simmering criticisms about the HFPA, including allegations of amateurism and corruption.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the awards\u2019 assets and trademarks were purchased and overhauled by a group of private investors including US billionaire Todd Boehly, and the HFPA was disbanded.<\/p>\n

Hollywood-based former HFPA members have been banned from accepting gifts, and are now paid a salary to vote for their favourite films and shows.<\/p>\n

The fact that they are employed by the same company behind the show itself has raised some concerns about potential conflicts of interest, but Gray disagreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think it does. Seriously, I had never heard of that before \u2014 paying voters to vote \u2014 but that\u2019s part of their duty,\u201d he told AFP.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI\u2019m pleased at how seriously everybody takes their job.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than 200 non-member (and unpaid) voters from 75 countries around the world have also been added to the Globes mix.<\/p>\n

\u2013 \u2018Box office\u2019 \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cedric The Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama announced the Globes nominees on \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d in the pre-dawn hours in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m taking coffee orders, guys,\u201d Cedric joked to the room of bleary-eyed journalists and Globes members.<\/p>\n

One of the United States\u2019 biggest national television networks, CBS has stepped in to become the new home of the Globes, after long-standing host NBC ended its deal to broadcast the event.<\/p>\n

CBS bosses will be hoping for vastly improved ratings, after the 2023 Globes slumped to a new low of just 6.3 million viewers, even as other shows such as the Oscars recovered from pandemic viewership nadirs.<\/p>\n

A new category for \u201cbest cinematic or box office achievement\u201d was added, paving the way for nominations for popular films that would not usually earn critical recognition.<\/p>\n

Among the eight nominees were Universal\u2019s \u2018The Super Mario Bros. Movie<\/em>\u2018 and Marvel superhero film \u2018Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year, you\u2019ve heard of these nominees. You\u2019ve probably seen these nominees,\u201d said Gray.<\/p>\n

In another seeming bid to honor more household names, the number of nominees in each category has been increased.<\/p>\n

A-listers such as Leonardo DiCaprio \u2014 the star of Martin Scorsese\u2019s crime epic \u2018Killers of the Flower Moon<\/em>\u2018 \u2014 and Emma Stone for her turn in female Frankenstein-esque drama \u2018Poor Things<\/em>\u2018 scored nominations.<\/p>\n

So did Paul Giamatti (\u2018The Holdovers<\/em>\u2018), Timothee Chalamet (\u2018Wonka<\/em>\u2018), Natalie Portman (\u2018May December<\/em>\u2018) and Bradley Cooper \u2014 as both actor and director of \u2018Maestro<\/em>.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Globes also honor the best in television.<\/p>\n

\u2018Succession<\/em>\u2018 topped the drama section with nine nominations, while comedies \u2018The Bear<\/em>\u2018 and \u2018Only Murders in the Building<\/em>\u2018 led their section with five each.<\/p>\n
