Despite this, he maintained his composure, knowing that his opponent may counterpunch.<\/p>\n<p>Haney claimed that instead of sprinting toward the finish, his father and head coach, Bill Haney, pushed him to follow the game plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to go in there and I know I was getting him hurt,\u2019 Haney explained. \u2018My dad said stay focused, stick to the game plan.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the reigning lightweight champion, Haney was fighting at 140 pounds for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt so much stronger \u2013 140 got a new king,\u201d Haney, 25, said.<\/p>\n<p>In order to move up a weight class, Haney gave up his 135-pound <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bolnews.com\/latest\/2022\/04\/whyte-slams-wbc-champ-furys-dirty-tactics\/\">WBC<\/a>, WBA, IBF, and WBO titles in November.<\/p>\n<p>This is his current 31-0 record with 15 knockouts.
