{"id":31140,"date":"2023-12-03T17:12:05","date_gmt":"2023-12-03T17:12:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/terrorist-plot-probe-after-deadly-paris-stabbing\/"},"modified":"2023-12-03T17:12:05","modified_gmt":"2023-12-03T17:12:05","slug":"terrorist-plot-probe-after-deadly-paris-stabbing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/terrorist-plot-probe-after-deadly-paris-stabbing\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Terrorist plot\u2019 probe after deadly Paris stabbing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>French prosecutors have opened an investigation into a \u201cterrorist plot\u201d after a man known to the authorities as a radical with mental health troubles stabbed a tourist to death and wounded two other people in central Paris at the weekend before being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>The attack close to the Eiffel Tower occurred at around 9pm (2000 GMT) on Saturday during a busy weekend, at a time when France is on its highest alert against the background of the fighting between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors specialising in terrorist incidents told <em>AFP<\/em> on Sunday they had launched a probe into the attacker, identified as Armand Rajabpour-Miyandoab, a French national born in 1997 to Iranian parents who was arrested soon after the knife and hammer attack.<\/p>\n<p>He is suspected of murder and attempted murder \u201cin connection with a terrorist plot\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A 23-year-old man, identified by a judicial source as a German-Filipino citizen, died in the attack. A 66-year-old British citizen and a 60-year-old French national were wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Rajabpour-Miyandoab, who is known to authorities for extremism, shouted  \u201cAllahu Akbar\u201d (God is greatest) at the moment of the attack, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said at the scene by Bir Hakeim bridge over the River Seine.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1781382\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The suspect, who lived with his parents in the Essonne region south of Paris, told police he could not stand Muslims being killed in \u201cAfghanistan and Palestine\u201d and accused France of being \u201can accomplice to what Israel is doing\u201d in the Gaza Strip, Darmanin added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not give in to terrorism,\u201d Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the attack.<\/p>\n<p>President Emmanuel Macron said he was sending his condolences to the family of the man killed in the \u201cterrorist attack\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"unstable-and-easily-influenced\" href=\"#unstable-and-easily-influenced\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Unstable and easily influenced\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Police and security sources confirmed the attacker had posted a video on social media at the moment of the attack, claiming responsibility and speaking about \u201ccurrent events, the government [and] the murder of innocent Muslims\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators would scrutinise his medical history, a security source told <em>AFP<\/em>, saying the attacker was \u201cvery unstable and easily influenced\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The attacker was \u201cbeing monitored in a way that did not mean he was being hospitalised, he was supposed to follow a course of treatment\u201d for his mental health issues, Health Minister Aurelien Rousseau told broadcaster <em>France 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs often in these cases, there\u2019s a mixture of an ideology, an easily influenced person and, unfortunately, psychiatry,\u201d Rousseau added.<\/p>\n<p>Darmanin said the man had previously been sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning another attack in the Paris business district of La Defense, which he failed to carry out.<\/p>\n<p>A taxi driver who witnessed the scene intervened, Darmanin added, saving the wife of the slain tourist.<\/p>\n<p>Patrick Pelloux, an emergency doctor who was on duty at the time of the attack, said the couple were both nurses, adding that the woman was severely shocked but unhurt.<\/p>\n<p>The attacker then crossed the bridge, lashing out at others and injuring one with a hammer.<\/p>\n<p>Pursuing police used a taser to neutralise the man, who was then arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Rousseau told <em>France 3<\/em> today that the wounded victims were \u201cin good health\u201d, suffering only \u201csuperficial traumas, but of course psychological traumas that will be enormous\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"help-help\" href=\"#help-help\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Help, help\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Joseph S, a 37-year-old supermarket manager who asked not to give his last name, witnessed the scene as he sat in a bar.<\/p>\n<p>He heard screams and people shouting \u201chelp, help\u201d as they ran.
