The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI) on Saturday elected Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as the new chairman in the intra-party elections<\/a> held on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).<\/p>\n

Gohar won the chairman\u2019s position unopposed.<\/p>\n

Barrister Gohar, who was nominated<\/a> by Imran Khan for the top slot a couple of days ago, submitted his nomination papers for the office of the party\u2019s chairman.<\/p>\n

Speaking in Peshawar after his election as chairman, Gohar said he will keep fulfilling this responsibility as Imran\u2019s representative.<\/p>\n

He said that Pakistan has 175 political parties, all of which have been providing details of their intra-party polls to the ECP since 1960. \u201cHowever, none of these polls have been scrutinised as closely as those of the PTI.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are seeing this and will block the oppression,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have to take the country forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further added that PTI\u2019s purpose is to struggle, and that Imran Khan is in jail because of his efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen elections take place, we will defeat everyone,\u201d Gohar said.<\/p>\n

Omer Ayub Khan was elected as the party Secretary-General. Provincially, Munir Ahmed Baloch was elected the party president of Balochistan; Haleem Adil Sheikh for Sindh; Ali Amin Gandapur for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Dr Yasmin Rashid as president Punjab.<\/p>\n

Akbar S. Babar, one of the founding members of PTI, had rejected<\/a> the nomination of Barrister Gohar Ali Khan as a candidate for the party chairman\u2019s slot, calling it \u201cselection instead of an election\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a press statement, Babar, who had filed the foreign funding case against the PTI, said the nomination of the new PTI chairman has raised serious questions about the transparency and credibility of the entire PTI intra-party election process.<\/p>\n

He said that for a party that champions transparency and level playing field in the national elections is shying away from allowing its workers a level playing field to elect its leadership without interference and manipulation.<\/p>\n

The ECP had on Nov 23 annu\u00adlled the PTI\u2019s intra-party polls held in June last year, terming them \u201chighly objectionable\u201d.<\/p>\n

The order came at a time when general elections are about two months away and political parties are ratcheting up their poll campaigns across the country.<\/p>\n

The PTI, however, has complained about an uneven playing field and termed the ECP\u2019s ruling an attempt to keep Imran Khan and his party away from polls.<\/p>\n

A PTI leader told Dawn<\/em> on condition of anonymity that the decision to appoint Mr Gohar, who is an associate of PPP leader Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, was not a wise move due to his proximity to the PPP stalwart.<\/p>\n

But in a statement on Friday, a PTI spokesperson said the party\u2019s decision to hold intra-party elections on the ECP\u2019s directives was a clear sign of the party\u2019s unshakable commitment to democracy and unwavering belief in the rule of law.<\/p>\n

The statement said that PTI had also held intra-party elections last year according to the law. However, he added, in order to set a great example of respect for law, the party decided to hold the intra-party elections again despite the \u201cillegal decision\u201d of the electoral watchdog, declaring the last year\u2019s polls null and void.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
