On Wednesday, the FBR had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1793765\/pia-accounts-frozen-amid-safety-review-by-eu\">frozen<\/a> 28 PIA accounts. Additionally, Pakistan State Oil had threatened to stop the airline\u2019s oil supply if outstanding dues were not settled.<\/p>\n<p>These actions came at a time when a team from the European Union\u2019s Avi\u00adation Safety Agency (EAS\u00adA) was in Pakistan to assess issues related to flight safety.<\/p>\n<p>The EASA had barred PIA from operating flights to Europe after a plane crashed in Karachi on May 22, 2020. The restrictions were imposed in light of an explosive claim by former aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan in parliament that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1564911\">40 per cent<\/a> of Pakistani pilots had questionable qualifications.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1587854\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In a notification today, a copy of which is available with <em>Dawn.com<\/em>, the FBR\u2019s deputy commissioner for Inland Revenue said: \u201cThis office has been directed to withdraw the notice mentioned above and to de-attach the bank accounts of the subject taxpayer with immediate effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the board highlighted that the said de-attachment did not bar the department from pursuing \u201crecovery proceedings\u201d under Section 14(3) of the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/download1.fbr.gov.pk\/Docs\/20196251065257874FEDERALEXCISEACT2005amendedupto11thmarch2019.pdf\">Federal Excise Act, 2005<\/a>. The law pertains to the recovery of \u201cunpaid duty or of erroneously refunded duty or arrears of duty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <em>Dawn.com<\/em>, PIA spokesperson Abdullah Khan confirmed that the FBR has ordered the unfreezing of the airline\u2019s accounts across the country.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the national carrier and FBR\u2019s Large Tax Unit were in constant contact to resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"pias-woes\" href=\"#pias-woes\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>PIA\u2019s woes<\/h2>\n<p>As the national flag carrier is experiencing billions of rupees in losses, the government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1780642\">anno\u00adunced<\/a> privatisation plans for the debt-ridden PIA along with outsourcing airport operations.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1791417\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Last month, PIA\u2019s fortunes plummeted to an all-time low when its operations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781514\">grounded to a halt<\/a> after PSO cut the carrier\u2019s fuel supply over mounting unpaid dues. Over 500 flights were cancelled in two weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Although the operations were later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1782261\">restored<\/a>, the government has now stepped up on its decisions regarding the airline\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the PIA chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1790809\">cancelled<\/a> scheduled off days on Saturday and Sunday and instructed senior officials to report to their offices, along with the relevant departmental general managers and their teams, to complete tasks pertaining to the carrier\u2019s divestment process.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Board of Revenue on Thursday withdrew its orders to freeze the Pakistan International Airlines\u2019 bank accounts but at the same time clarified that these directives did not bar it from pursuing recovery proceedings.
