{"id":29785,"date":"2023-11-29T22:01:15","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T22:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/after-17-days-trapped-in-tunnel-india-workers-say-hope-kept-them-alive\/"},"modified":"2023-11-29T22:01:15","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T22:01:15","slug":"after-17-days-trapped-in-tunnel-india-workers-say-hope-kept-them-alive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/after-17-days-trapped-in-tunnel-india-workers-say-hope-kept-them-alive\/","title":{"rendered":"After 17 days trapped in tunnel, India workers say hope kept them alive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>After 17 days trapped inside a collapsed Himalayan road tunnel they were building, Indian workers described the horror of their ordeal, and the hopes and prayers that kept them strong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were really scared, every moment felt that death was standing nearby,\u201d rescued worker Deepak Kumar told <em>AFP<\/em> on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were not sure whether our lives would be saved or not.\u201d The men were welcomed as heroes after being hauled through 57 metres (187 feet) of steel pipe on stretchers specially fitted with wheels late Tuesday, the culmination of a marathon engineering operation.<\/p>\n<p>Draped in garlands of orange marigolds, they were greeted with wild cheers.<br \/>\n\u201cThe world is again beautiful for us,\u201d rescued worker Sabah Ahmad told <em>AFP<\/em>, describing the heartache of hearing his wife\u2019s \u201cworried and hopeless\u201d voice while he was trapped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know it was a difficult moment for those inside and more difficult for families outside,\u201d said Ahmad, who comes from Bihar, one of India\u2019s poorest states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut at last we have come out, and it is the only thing that matters.\u201d His wife Musarrat Jahan, speaking to <em>AFP<\/em> by phone from Bihar, said that \u201cno words\u201d could explain how happy she felt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only my husband got a new life, we also got a new life,\u201d she said. \u201cWe will never forget it\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"lost-hope\" href=\"#lost-hope\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Lost hope\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Previous hopes of reaching the men were repeatedly dashed by falling debris and the breakdown of multiple drilling machines, and the men spoke of how hard it had been to keep their spirits up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not easy,\u201d Kumar said. \u201cAfter three or four days inside the collapsed tunnel, and the rescue team had failed to reach us, the reality is that our confidence and faith were at a low level.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1792987\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Most of the trapped men are migrant workers who left home to find employment, working on the Silkyara tunnel in northern Uttarakhand state, hundreds of kilometres (miles) from home high up in the bitterly cold Himalayan foothills.<\/p>\n<p>Rescue teams later set up a telephone exchange to allow families far from the site to call in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told my family, \u2018I am fine and healthy, do not worry, everything will be all right, we will come out soon\u2019\u201d, Kumar said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut while I was saying these words to them, sometimes I felt strongly that I will never be able to see my parents.\u201d Guriya Devi, wife of rescued worker Sushil Kumar, told <em>AFP<\/em> that the family had \u201cpassed through horrible times, and sometimes we lost hope\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chamra Oraon, 32, from Jharkhand state, described the horror he felt when he heard a thud and debris began to fall deep inside the mountain road tunnel on November 12 \u2014 and the terror as the rock fall blocked the only route out with tonnes of rubble.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI ran for my life but got stuck on the wrong side,\u201d he told the <em><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/uttarakhand-tunnel-rescue-operation-insider-speaks-restless-hungry-prayed-silently-never-lost-hope-9046420\/\">Indian Express<\/a><\/em> newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs it became clear we would be there for a long time, we grew restless, hungry. But we prayed silently for help.\u201d Subodh Kumar Verma told <em>AFP<\/em> how the first 24 hours in the tunnel were the worst, when they feared they could starve to death \u2014 if their air did not run out first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe faced problems related to food and air for 24 hours there,\u201d Verma said.<br \/>\nBut morale was boosted after rescue teams managed to connect a thin pipe through to them, bringing in oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, it was only small packets of puffed rice and seeds, but days later, the tube was widened to be able to send proper meals of lentils and rice, packed into plastic bottles and sent down the chute.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter food items were sent through pipes things improved,\u201d said Verma.<br \/>\n\u201cWhen we ate the first morsel, we felt someone above had reached out to us,\u201d Oraon told the <em>Express<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>But keeping busy while waiting for rescue was tough, with the workers playing games on their phones \u2014 which they could charge as power had remained.<br \/>\n\u201cWe immersed ourselves in Ludo on the phone,\u201d Oraon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe spoke among ourselves and got to know each other\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"knights-in-mining-armour\" href=\"#knights-in-mining-armour\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Knights in Mining Armour\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Though trapped, the men had plenty of space in the tunnel, with the area inside 8.5 metres high and stretching about two kilometres in length.<\/p>\n<p>Arnold Dix, president of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association, who had been advising the engineers, said he had heard the men had been keeping busy \u201cplaying cricket\u201d as they waited for rescue.<\/p>\n<p>That finally came on Tuesday. After a giant earth-boring drill was snapped by metal girders buried in the rubble, a team of miners dug the final section by hand using a so-called \u201crat-hole\u201d technique inside a narrow tube.<\/p>\n<p>Indian media dubbed the diggers \u201crock stars\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnights in Mining Armour\u201d, the Times of India called them. \u201cAce of
