Gupta was arrested by Czech authorities in June and is awaiting extradition. He could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1776744\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe defendant conspired from India to assassinate, right here in New York City, a US citizen of Indian origin who has publicly advocated for the establishment of a sovereign state for Sikhs,\u201d Damian Williams, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>India\u2019s embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The charges come after a senior Biden administration official last week said US authorities had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1791573\">thwarted a plot to kill a Sikh separatist<\/a> in the United States and issued a warning to India over concerns the government in New Delhi was involved. The official said Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who says he is a dual citizen of the United States and Canada, was the target of the foiled plot.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors did not name the target of Gupta\u2019s alleged plot, who they described as a vocal critic of the Indian government who leads a US-based organisation that advocates for the secession of India\u2019s Punjab state, which is home to a large population of Sikhs.<\/p>\n<p>News of the incident comes two months after Canada said there were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776704\/indian-envoy-expelled-as-pm-trudeau-links-delhi-to-sikh-leaders-death\">\u201ccredible\u201d allegations<\/a> linking Indian agents to the June murder of a Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in a Vancouver suburb, something India has rejected.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, the official recruited Gupta in May 2023 to orchestrate the assassination. Gupta had previously told the official he had been involved with trafficking drugs and weapons, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Gupta then reached out to someone he believed was a criminal associate for help hiring a hitman, but that associate was actually a Drug Enforcement Administration undercover agent, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>The day after Nijjar was killed in Vancouver, Gupta wrote to the undercover DEA agent saying Nijjar \u201cwas also the target\u201d and \u201cwe have so many targets,\u201d prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Gupta faces two counts of murder-for-hire and murder-for-hire conspiracy. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian government has complained about the presence of Sikh separatist groups outside India, including in Canada and the United States.
