{"id":29101,"date":"2023-11-27T21:39:02","date_gmt":"2023-11-27T21:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/us-president-biden-to-miss-cop28-climate-summit-official\/"},"modified":"2023-11-27T21:39:02","modified_gmt":"2023-11-27T21:39:02","slug":"us-president-biden-to-miss-cop28-climate-summit-official","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/us-president-biden-to-miss-cop28-climate-summit-official\/","title":{"rendered":"US President Biden to miss COP28 climate summit: official"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>President Joe Biden will miss the latest UN climate summit in Dubai, after two years of attending the talks in hopes of highlighting US leadership, a US official said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Some 70,000 people including national leaders and Pope Francis are expected at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1748102\">COP28<\/a> as it opens on Thursday, in what could be the largest United Nations climate summit ever.<\/p>\n<p>Schedules released by the White House for Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris showed neither heading to Dubai this week.<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s engagements include a trip to Colorado to highlight US <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/10\/16\/president-biden-to-visit-largest-wind-tower-manufacturer-in-the-world-highlight-how-bidenomics-is-driving-record-investments-in-congresswoman-lauren-boeberts-district\/\">investment<\/a> in wind energy, a meeting with the president of Angola and the lighting of the national Christmas tree.<\/p>\n<p>A US official confirmed that Biden was not planning to attend COP28 this week or during a second window close to the end of the talks on December 12.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1789078\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Biden administration was still discussing whether to send a top-level official to Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>John Kerry, the US climate envoy and former secretary of state and senator, will be leading day-to-day negotiations for the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The official did not give a reason for Biden\u2019s decision. But Biden has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1792945\/biden-hopes-for-extension-of-israel-hamas-truce-as-more-hostages-released\">focused<\/a> for more than a month on the war between Israel and Hamas and is also looking to highlight his domestic agenda with less than a year to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1787726\">US presidential election<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Until Biden, it was not customary for the US president to attend each COP summit.<\/p>\n<p>Biden in 2021 travelled to Glasgow to vow that the United States would again take a global leadership role on climate after his predecessor Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1336862\">pulled out<\/a> of the Paris climate accord.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, who is seeking the White House again, is a climate sceptic who says that action is too costly to the United States.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1720452\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Biden again made a brief trip last year to COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has put a high priority on climate domestically, with the so-called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1703965\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>, his signature legislative achievement, channelling billions of dollars to the green economy including through incentives for electric cars.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of COP28, Kerry held extended talks with his Chinese counterpart, Xie Zhenhua, with the two negotiators promising that their countries, the world\u2019s two largest greenhouse gas emitters, would work together for progress in Dubai.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Joe Biden will miss the latest UN climate summit in Dubai, after two years of attending the talks in hopes of highlighting US leadership, a US official said on Sunday.
