{"id":27716,"date":"2023-11-23T21:08:13","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T21:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/dhol-walas-waging-a-losing-battle-the-express-tribune\/"},"modified":"2023-11-23T21:08:13","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T21:08:13","slug":"dhol-walas-waging-a-losing-battle-the-express-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/dhol-walas-waging-a-losing-battle-the-express-tribune\/","title":{"rendered":"Dhol walas waging a losing battle | The Express Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<strong class=\"location-names\"><br \/>\nRAWALPINDI:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Around six months ago, Karam Dad came to Rawalpindi as work dried up in his village in Sargodha\u2019s Khushab district.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Having played the dhol, the traditional drum, for the last 20 years, he had seen opportunities become fewer as disc jockeys and bands with humongous music systems replaced them at weddings, festivities and even political gatherings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">The situation seems to be worse in Rawalpindi, according to Dad. \u201cI have been sitting daily on the pavement near Murree Road but have gotten only five assignments so far,\u201d he told The Express Tribune. \u201cBack in the day, we barely had time and were often booked days in advance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Now, Dad says, traditional dhol walas have been replaced by DJs and digital devices. He said in areas where such bands were not available, people use social media to find an alternative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Dad does not have any digital presence or the wherewithal to manage it. Instead, he relies on the traditional method of being available at his \u2018regular spot\u2019 or to make a beeline for wherever any festivity is taking place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:black\">Read\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2445004\/lok-mela-showcases-cultural-diversity\">Lok Mela showcases cultural diversity<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">But such treks are not always successful. \u201cOften, we see a celebration and go there with the dhol hanging from our only to be turned away.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">He said the situation was so dire that hundreds of such performers who had travelled to Rawalpindi for livelihood had to go multiple days without work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">\u201cMany have started work as daily-wage labourers and some of them have even sold their drums and trumpets,\u201d said Dad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">He said the situation was the same across the province, with families who had been in the profession for generations now involved in a different line of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Muhammad Moiz, who came to Rawalpindi from Kandian, is another such drummer whose regular haunt is near Liaquat Bagh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">He wistfully talks about the time when their arrival at a wedding or festivity would see revelers encircle them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\"><strong>Read more<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/2444402\/folk-festival-opens-at-lok-virsa-theatre-today\">Folk festival opens at Lok Virsa theatre today<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Even when processions were in cars, they would slow down for the percussive beats of the dhol walas they tailed them on foot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">\u201cNow, people invite drummers to their jalsas (political gathering). They book DJs for millions of rupees who have modern music systems. We cannot compete with that,\u201d Moiz says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">For Moiz, the booming sound systems are the death knell for traditional drummers. \u201cThe dhol culture in Punjab is on its last leg.\u201d The dhol walas remain popular during harvest but that makes them precious little, says Moiz. \u201cOther than that, we are reduced to being a symbolic presence at cultural fairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:black\">Until a decade ago, a celebration felt incomplete without someone playing the dhol, says another traditional drummer Karam Deen. \u201cTwo of my sons used to play drums.
