Microsoft announced on Monday the hiring of OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman following his shock sacking from the company whose ChatGPT chatbot has led the rapid rise of artificial intelligence technology.<\/p>\n

OpenAI has appointed Emmett Shear, a former chief executive of Amazon\u2019s streaming platform Twitch, as its new CEO despite reported pressure from Microsoft and other major investors to reinstate Altman.<\/p>\n

OpenAI\u2019s board sacked Altman on Friday, with US media citing concerns that the former CEO was underestimating the dangers of its tech and leading the company away from its stated mission \u2014 claims his successor has denied.<\/p>\n

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella wrote on X that Altman \u201cwill be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team,\u201d along with OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman and other colleagues.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe mission continues,\u201d Altman posted on X, formerly Twitter.<\/p>\n

Altman shot to fame with the launch of its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot last year, which ignited a race to advance AI research and development, as well as billions being invested in the sector.<\/p>\n

His sacking triggered several other high-profile departures from the company, as well as a reported push by investors to bring him back.<\/p>\n

But OpenAI stood by its decision in a memo sent to employees on Sunday night, saying \u201cSam\u2019s behavior and lack of transparency\u2026 undermined the board\u2019s ability to effectively supervise the company,\u201d The New York Times<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n

Altman posted on Sunday on messaging platform X an image of himself wearing an OpenAI guest badge with the caption: \u201cfirst and last time I ever wear one of these.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Badly\u2019 handled sacking<\/h2>\n

Shear confirmed his appointment as OpenAI\u2019s interim CEO in a post on X on Monday, while also denying reports that Altman had been fired over safety concerns regarding the use of AI technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday I got a call inviting me to consider a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: to become the interim CEO of @OpenAI<\/a>. After consulting with my family and reflecting on it for just a few hours, I accepted,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore I took the job, I checked on the reasoning behind the change. The board did not remove Sam over any specific disagreement on safety, their reasoning was completely different from that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s clear that the process and communications around Sam\u2019s removal has been handled very badly, which has seriously damaged our trust,\u201d Shear added.<\/p>\n

Global tech titan Microsoft has invested more than $10 billion in OpenAI and has rolled out the AI pioneer\u2019s tech in its own products.<\/p>\n

Microsoft\u2019s Nadella added in his post that \u201cwe look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI\u2019s new leadership team and working with them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

OpenAI is in fierce competition with others including Microsoft, Google and Meta, as well as start-ups like Anthropic and Stability AI, to develop its own AI models.<\/p>\n

Generative AI platforms such as ChatGPT are trained on vast amounts of data to enable them to answer questions, even complex ones, in human-like language.<\/p>\n

They are also used to generate and manipulate imagery.<\/p>\n

But the tech has triggered warnings about the dangers of its misuse \u2014from blackmailing people with \u201cdeepfake\u201d images to the manipulation of images and harmful disinformation.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
