{"id":25191,"date":"2023-11-16T15:40:11","date_gmt":"2023-11-16T15:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/tiktok-joins-meta-in-appealing-against-eu-gatekeeper-status-the-express-tribune\/"},"modified":"2023-11-16T15:40:11","modified_gmt":"2023-11-16T15:40:11","slug":"tiktok-joins-meta-in-appealing-against-eu-gatekeeper-status-the-express-tribune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/tiktok-joins-meta-in-appealing-against-eu-gatekeeper-status-the-express-tribune\/","title":{"rendered":"TikTok joins Meta in appealing against EU gatekeeper status | The Express Tribune"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"\">\n<p>TikTok on Thursday joined Meta\u00a0in appealing against the &#8220;gatekeeper&#8221; status under the\u00a0Digital Markets Act\u00a0(DMA), an EU law that brings in tougher rules for tech companies and makes it easier for users to move between competing services.<\/p>\n<p>Meta on Wednesday\u00a0challenged\u00a0the &#8220;gatekeeper&#8221; designations for its Messenger and Marketplace platforms but did not appeal against the status for Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union in September picked 22 &#8220;gatekeeper&#8221; services, run by six tech companies &#8211; Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet&#8217;s\u00a0Google, Amazon, Meta and ByteDance&#8217;s TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>While Microsoft, Google and Amazon\u00a0did not challenge\u00a0their designations, Apple is yet to comment on its plan. Nov. 16 is the last date to appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our appeal is based on the belief that our designation risks undermining the DMA&#8217;s own stated goal by protecting actual gatekeepers from newer competitors like TikTok,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Far from being a gatekeeper, our platform, which has been operating in Europe for just over five years, is arguably the most capable challenger to more entrenched platform businesses.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The video-sharing app said it does not meet the law&#8217;s threshold for revenues generated in the European Economic Area of 7.5 billion euros ($8.13 billion) per annum.<\/p>\n<p>Under the DMA, companies with more than 45 million monthly active users and a market capitalisation of 75 billion euros are considered gatekeepers providing a core platform service.<\/p>\n<p>The company said it was designated a gatekeeper based on its parent company, ByteDance&#8217;s, global market capitalisation that is based primarily on the performance of business lines that do not even operate in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, China&#8217;s ByteDance\u00a0bought back\u00a0shares from US\u00a0employees in a deal that valued the company at $223.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>TikTok, which has over 134 million monthly users, said it is a challenger, not an incumbent, in digital advertising and no market investigation was conducted in relation to its designation by the European Commission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;version=v5.0&#038;appId=419051588770002&#038;autoLogAppEvents=1\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TikTok on Thursday joined Meta\u00a0in appealing against the &#8220;gatekeeper&#8221; status under the\u00a0Digital Markets Act\u00a0(DMA), an EU law that brings in tougher rules for tech companies and makes it easier for users to move between competing services.
