An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore on Tuesday extended PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid\u2019s judicial remand till Nov 27 in a case pertaining to incendiary speeches she allegedly delivered on May 9 against state institutions at the city\u2019s Sherpao Bridge and rioting in the wake of party chairman Imran Khan\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n

Imran\u2019s arrest<\/a> on May 9 in the Al-Qadir Trust case had resulted in widespread violence and saw important military installations come under attack<\/a>, on the basis of which the state had launched a severe crackdown against his party.<\/p>\n

While Imran Khan was released<\/a> a few days later (he has since been rearrested in the Toshakhana and then the cipher case), scores of PTI workers and almost the entire top-tier leadership were rounded up, with many still facing court proceedings under serious charges.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Lahore police launched a fresh crackdown<\/a> on PTI workers and activists. The investigation police sprung into action on the basis of a new list of 884 PTI workers circulated to all the 84 police stations of the city as \u2018new targets\u2019.<\/p>\n

According to an official, a majority of these new targets had been declared the \u2018B team\u2019 of the PTI\u2019s top leaderships, including Rashid, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, Mian Aslam Iqbal, Hassaan Niazi.<\/p>\n

During today\u2019s hearing, Judge Arshad Javed presided over the hearing during which Rashid contended that she and other PTI leaders wanted to contest the upcoming elections, which are scheduled for February 8.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to contest the elections,\u201d she said. \u201cIjaz Chaudhry, Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, and Omar Sarfaraz Cheema as well as other have to contest the polls,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The court then asked if it was necessary to be out of jail to contest the elections. To this, Rashid said it was not necessary to but \u201celection campaigning has to be carried out\u201d.<\/p>\n

Judge Javed informed Rashid that a challan for one of her cases against her had been submitted to the court. \u201cI don\u2019t know how many cases are registered against you,\u201d he said, adding that the court had summoned challans of others nominated in the case at hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cFifteen women, including me, have been in jail for the past six months,\u201d Rashid said. To this, the judge said the court would shortlist the witnesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have come to arrest me in 13 different cases registered in Mianwali, Kasur, Faisalabad, and other districts,\u201d the PTI leader told the court.<\/p>\n

The judge remarked that this was the \u201cwork of the administration\u201d and the court\u2019s job was to function according to the law.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the prosecution team submitted a 280-page challan in the case. It included the names of Rana Tanveer, Riaz Hussain, Zayas Khan, and four others. The challan also included the names of 45 witnesses.<\/p>\n

The court summoned Rashid and other PTI leaders nominated in the case on Nov 24.<\/p>\n

After the hearing concluded, Rashid spoke to the media and said that she wanted to contest polls against PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and his brother, former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake us out if you want to contest the elections,\u201d she said, adding that contesting elections was her constitutional right. She also decried the fact that the challans against her hadn\u2019t been completed in the past six months.<\/p>\n
