{"id":24401,"date":"2023-11-14T06:45:07","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T06:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/denmark-debates-bill-to-ban-desecration-of-holy-quran\/"},"modified":"2023-11-14T06:45:07","modified_gmt":"2023-11-14T06:45:07","slug":"denmark-debates-bill-to-ban-desecration-of-holy-quran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/denmark-debates-bill-to-ban-desecration-of-holy-quran\/","title":{"rendered":"Denmark debates bill to ban desecration of Holy Quran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Denmark\u2019s parliament on Tuesday will debate a bill to ban burnings of the Holy Quran, after a string of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1767672\">desecrations<\/a> of the holy book sparked anger in Muslim countries.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 1,000 protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1766185\">attempted to march<\/a> to the Danish embassy in Baghdad\u2019s fortified Green Zone in late July, following a call by firebrand cleric Moqtada Sadr.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark\u2019s government said the tensions posed a threat to national security.<\/p>\n<p>The bill aims to make it a criminal offence to \u201cpublicly or with the intention of dissemination in a wider circle to treat a text with strong religious significance for a religious community\u2026 inappropriately,\u201d according to a summary on the parliament\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1767503\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Offenders could face up to two years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Between July 21 and October 24 this year, 483 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1762198\">book burnings<\/a> or flag burnings were recorded in Denmark, according to national police figures.<\/p>\n<p>Initially announced at the end of August, the bill was amended following criticism that its first draft limited freedom of expression and would be difficult to enforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bill has been narrowed to specifically target improper treatment of scriptures of significant religious importance,\u201d the justice ministry said in a statement at the end of October.<\/p>\n<p>The bill was originally planned to cover objects of significant religious importance.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"criticism\" href=\"#criticism\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Criticism<\/h2>\n<p>The first draft of the bill was criticised by some \u2014 including politicians, artists, media and freedom of speech experts \u2014 who saw it as a return to a blasphemy law that Denmark <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2017\/jun\/02\/denmark-scraps-334-year-old-blasphemy-law\">abolished<\/a> in 2017.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1772333\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Police and judicial officials also feared it would be difficult to enforce.<br \/>\n\u201cWith the changes we are now proposing, the law will be easier to navigate \u2014 including for the police and the courts,\u201d Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said in the statement in October, noting that the terrorist threat against Denmark had intensified.<\/p>\n<p>The new legislation would be included in chapter 12 of Denmark\u2019s penal code, which covers national security.<\/p>\n<p>In 2006, a wave of anti-Danish anger and violence erupted in the Muslim world following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/179607\/danish-editor-defends-publication-of-cartoons\">publication of caricatures<\/a> of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).<\/p>\n<p>After the first reading Tuesday, the proposed bill must be studied by a committee and then submitted for two further readings before a vote.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Denmark\u2019s parliament on Tuesday will debate a bill to ban burnings of the Holy Quran, after a string of desecrations of the holy book sparked anger in Muslim countries.
