{"id":2435,"date":"2023-09-10T01:34:11","date_gmt":"2023-09-10T01:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/modi-uses-bharat-for-g20-nameplate-not-india-amid-name-change-row\/"},"modified":"2023-09-10T01:34:11","modified_gmt":"2023-09-10T01:34:11","slug":"modi-uses-bharat-for-g20-nameplate-not-india-amid-name-change-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/modi-uses-bharat-for-g20-nameplate-not-india-amid-name-change-row\/","title":{"rendered":"Modi uses \u2018Bharat\u2019 for G20 nameplate, not India, amid name-change row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s placard at the opening of the G20 summit on Saturday referred to India as \u201cBharat\u201d, raising speculation of a change of name for the South Asian nation.<\/p>\n<p>India is also called Bharat, Bharata, Hindustan \u2014 its pre-colonial names \u2014 in Indian languages and these are used interchangeably by the public and officially.<\/p>\n<p>While the country has traditionally stuck to using India in titles such as president or prime minister while communicating in English, President Droupadi Murmu earlier this week referred to herself as the \u201cPresident of Bharat\u201d in a dinner invitation for a reception of G20 leaders, sparking controversy.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1774324\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As Modi declared the summit in New Delhi open on Saturday, he sat behind a table nameplate that read \u201cBharat\u201d, while the G20 logo had both names &#8211; \u201cBharat\u201d written in Hindi and \u201cIndia\u201d in English.<\/p>\n<p>Such placards have used \u201cIndia\u201d in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Hindi, the language spoken by a majority of the population, Modi said \u201cBharat welcomes the delegates as the President of the G20\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>New Delhi is hosting leaders of major economies for the bloc\u2019s summit at a new, $300 million conch-shaped convention centre called Bharat Mandapam, opposite a 16th-century stone fort.<\/p>\n<p>While some supporters of the name Bharat say \u201cIndia\u201d was given by British colonisers, historians say the name predates colonial rule by centuries.<\/p>\n<p>The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the ideological parent of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), has always insisted on calling the country Bharat.<\/p>\n<p>Modi\u2019s rivals say the change has been forced by the new opposition alliance formed by 28 parties in July called INDIA or Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, to take on BJP in parliamentary elections next year.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Prime Minister\u2019s Office did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s placard at the opening of the G20 summit on Saturday referred to India as \u201cBharat\u201d, raising speculation of a change of name for the South Asian nation.
