Some faced multiple arrests despite court orders. Others have been arrested in unrelated cases, but in what seems to be a targeted attack on politicians who have fallen out of favour with the powers that be.<\/p>\n<p>As four months pass since that fateful day, <em>Dawn.com<\/em> has compiled data on high-profile PTI politicians who have been in legal trouble since then.<\/p>\n<p>This list does not include leaders who have departed from the party since May 9.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"imran-khan\" href=\"#imran-khan\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Imran Khan<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">This image, from a video shared by the PTI on Twitter, shows Imran Khan being taken away by Rangers personnel from the Islamabad High Court on May 9. \u2014 Screengrab from video on PTI account on X<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Date of first arrest:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751955\/crunch-time-for-pti-as-imran-held-nationwide-riots-erupt\">May 9<\/a> \u2014 Imran was whisked away by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court (IHC). He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1752554\">released<\/a> on May 12 after the IHC barred authorities from arresting him in any case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> Al Qadir Trust \u2014 NAB alleges the PTI government under Imran struck a deal with property tycoon Malik Riaz that caused a loss of more than $239 million to the national exchequer.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1751790\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>Second arrest:<\/strong> Aug 5 \u2014 Punjab police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1768528\">detained<\/a> Imran from his Lahore residence after his conviction in the Toshkhana case. He has been in Attock jail since then.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> Toshakhana case \u2014 Imran was found guilty of concealing details of gifts he received from a state gift repository and for providing false and inaccurate information about them, as alleged by the Election Commission of Pakistan. He was sentenced to three years in jail and fined Rs100,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aug 29:<\/strong> IHC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1772860\">suspended<\/a> the Toshakhana sentence, but Imran was not released as it emerged that he was already on judicial remand in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1771179\">cipher case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> Cipher case \u2014 The FIA accuses him of breaching the Official Secrets Act in the matter of an allegedly missing diplomatic document that supposedly contained a US threat to oust Imran Khan from power.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1769320\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>Other cases:<\/strong> Imran is currently facing around 180 cases, according to a <em>Dawn<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1773026\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"chaudhry-parvez-elahi\" href=\"#chaudhry-parvez-elahi\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Chaudhry Parvez Elahi<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">This screengrab shows PTI President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi being dragged outside his residence in Lahore as he was arrested on June 1. \u2014 Screengrab via video shared by Wasim Riaz<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>First arrest:<\/strong> June 1 \u2014 He was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757308\/pti-president-chaudhry-pervaiz-elahi-arrested-outside-lahore-residence\">arrested<\/a> by the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE)  and police after a week-long siege of his house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> ACE Gujrat accuses him of allegedly taking kickbacks in development projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second arrest:<\/strong> June 2 \u2014 A Lahore judicial magistrate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757659\">discharged<\/a> the PTI leader and ordered his release, but the ACE re-arrested him in another case registered in Gujranwala.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> In the Gujranwala case, Elahi is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757526\">accused<\/a> of causing a Rs100m loss to the national exchequer and receiving kickbacks as Punjab chief minister.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third arrest:<\/strong> June 3 \u2014 A Gujranwala court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757833\/respite-for-yasmin-rashid-but-liberty-eludes-parvez-elahi\">discharged<\/a> Elahi in <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/490711-punjab-ace-presents-pervez-elahi-in-anti-corruption-court\">two corruption cases<\/a> \u2014 including the one in which he was detained \u2014 but freedom eluded him as he was again arrested by anti-graft officials in yet another case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The case pertained to illegal recruitments of 12 Grade-17 officers in the Punjab Assembly, with Elahi being accused of getting the results of the testing service changed to select the candidates of his choice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth arrest:<\/strong> June 21 \u2014 The FIA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1760955\/lahore-court-sends-parvez-elahi-to-jail-in-money-laundering-case\">took him into custody<\/a> from jail in a money laundering case a day after he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1760900\/parvez-elahi-gets-bail-but-others-not-off-the-hook\">secured relief<\/a> from an anti-corruption court in Lahore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The FIA accused the PTI president of money laundering through a front man and booked him along with his son, Moonis Elahi, and three others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifth arrest:<\/strong> June 26 \u2014 A special court in Lahore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1761581\">granted Elahi bail<\/a> in the case on June 25, but he was again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1761837\">arrested<\/a> by the FIA outside Camp Jail in connection with another money laundering case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> In this case, the FIA alleged that Elahi handed over Rs50m to a woman via a frontman for money laundering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sixth arrest:<\/strong> July 15 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1765004\">Release orders<\/a> in this case were issued by a Lahore Banking Crimes Court a week after it allowed his post-arrest bail. But he was not set free as police said he was booked in a terror case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The said case was registered at Lahore\u2019s Ghalib Market police station under terrorism provisions. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1765237\">30-day detention order<\/a> under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) was also issued for Elahi on July 16 by the Lahore deputy commissioner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seventh arrest:<\/strong> Aug 14 \u2014 Upon completion of his detention under MPO, a NAB team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1765743\">arrested<\/a> Elahi from Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala jail \u2014  where he was taken on July 19, reportedly on administrative grounds \u2014 in yet another graft case.<\/p>\n<p><em>Case:<\/em> The NAB alleged Elahi received bribes\/kickbacks in exchange for getting the \u201ccontracts of road schemes of Gujrat Highways Division awarded to favourite\/hand-picked contractors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eighth arrest:<\/strong> Sept 1 \u2014 Fifteen days later, the Lahore High Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1773448\">directed<\/a> NAB to release him and barred authorities from arresting him in any case, but Islamabad police arrested him anyway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> Police said he was held under 3-MPO on a magistrate\u2019s orders. The order said Elahi should be detained for 15 days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ninth arrest:<\/strong> Sept 6 \u2014 The detention order was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774173\">suspended<\/a> by the IHC but Elahi was arrested yet again by the police the same day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The arrest was made in a case pertaining to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1742856\">clashes<\/a> between Islamabad police and PTI workers outside the Judicial Complex on March 18.<\/p>\n<p>The incarcerated PTI leader remains behind bars and continues to face inquiries and proceedings in several cases, with at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774436\">four registered with ACE<\/a>. A <em>Dawn<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774436\">report<\/a> says he has been arrested at least 11 times since the start of June.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"shah-mahmood-qureshi\" href=\"#shah-mahmood-qureshi\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Shah Mahmood Qureshi<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Shah Mahmood Qureshi.\u2014DawnNewsTV\/file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>First arrest:<\/strong> May 11 \u2014 PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, among several other current and former party leaders, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1752305\">detained<\/a> by Islamabad police two days after Imran\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong>  He was arrested for allegedly \u201cinciting arson and violent protests under a well-thought-out plan for threatening peace\u201d on May 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second arrest:<\/strong> May 23 \u2014 When he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755341\">set free<\/a>, Punjab police immediately re-arrested him outside Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala Jail after his detention orders were issued by the Rawalpindi deputy commissioner.<br \/>\nThe LHC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1758286\">ordered<\/a> his release on June 6.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third arrest:<\/strong> Aug 19 \u2014 A little over two months later, he was again <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1771020\">arrested<\/a> in Islamabad \u2014 this time by the FIA \u2014 in the same cipher case as the PTI chief and remains in custody to date.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"hassaan-khan-niazi\" href=\"#hassaan-khan-niazi\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Hassaan Khan Niazi<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Hassaan Khan Niazi. \u2014 Photo via Hassan Niazi\/Twitter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>First arrest:<\/strong> Aug 13 \u2014 Imran\u2019s nephew and PTI leader Barrister Hassaan Khan Niazi, who had been hiding to evade arrest since May 9 riots, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1770528\">arrested<\/a> from Abbottabad and handed over to the Quetta Police. On August 18, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1770793\">handed over to the military<\/a> for trial.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> Hassaan was one of the main suspects in the attack on Jinnah House attack case. The military alleges that Niazi was involved in the commission of offences that violate the Official Secrets Act 1923 and can be tried under military courts under the Pakistan Army Act 1952.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"dr-yasmin-rashid\" href=\"#dr-yasmin-rashid\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Dr Yasmin Rashid<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">PTI leader Yasmin Rashid photographed outside an anti-terrorism court in Lahore on June 3 after her acquittal in the Jinnah House attack case. \u2014 DawnNewsTV<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>First arrest:<\/strong> May 12 \u2014 PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid, along with 17 other women, was <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenews.com.pk\/latest\/1070073-dr-yasmin-rashid-arrested-from-hospital-faces-serious-charges\">initially detained<\/a> in Lahore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> She was taken into custody under the MPO in connection with May 9 violence and protests.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second arrest:<\/strong> May 14 \u2014 The LHC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1753036\">ordered her release<\/a> two days later, but she was re-arrested the same day in May 9-linked cases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The three cases include vandalism at Jinnah House in Lahore. An ATC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757833\">discharged<\/a> Rashid in the case on June 3, but she remained in custody in other cases.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Rashid faces court proceedings in multiple cases pertaining to the May 9 violence.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"asad-umar\" href=\"#asad-umar\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Asad Umar<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">This screengrab shows Asad Umar being taken into custody by the Islamabad Police on May 10, 2023. \u2014 DawnNewsTv<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>First arrest:<\/strong> May 10 \u2014 PTI leader Asad Umar was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1752007\">arrested<\/a> from IHC premises under the MPO and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755449\">released<\/a> on May 24.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> Scant details are available about the case in which he was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Umar is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1771545\">facing an inquiry<\/a> in the cipher case registered against Imran.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"ali-muhammad-khan\" href=\"#ali-muhammad-khan\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Ali Muhammad Khan<\/h2>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Ali Muhammad Khan speaks to the media outside Mardan ATC. \u2014 Photo via PTI\/Twitter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>First arrest:<\/strong> May 11 \u2014 PTI leader Ali Muhammad was first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1753984\">arrested<\/a> by Secretariat police in Islamabad under 3-MPO.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The arrest was made in connection with the violence that took place on May 9.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Second arrest:<\/strong> May 17 \u2014 He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1767107\">re-arrested<\/a> in Jhelum immediately after he was released on the IHC\u2019s directives. Scarce details are available about the case in which he was arrested this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third arrest:<\/strong> May 30 \u2014 He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757007\">arrested<\/a> a third time by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police from outside Adiala Jail after the LHC\u2019s Rawalpindi bench ordered his release the same day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The PTI leader was arrested the 3-MPO this time as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fourth arrest:<\/strong> June 9 \u2014 The Peshawar High Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1758476\">set aside<\/a> the detention order on June 8 and the next day, a Mardan ATC <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/anti-terrorism%20court%20(ATC)%20ordered%20his%20release,%20former%20PTI%20MNA%20Ali%20Muhammad%20Khan%20was%20re-arrested%20in%20Mardan%20on%20Friday%20for%20the%20fifth%20time%20since%20protests%20took%20place%20in%20the%20wake%20of%20party%20chief%20Imran%20Khan%E2%80%99s%20arrest%20on%20May%209.\">ordered<\/a> his release in all cases pertaining to the May 9 violence. But he was re-arrested by the ACE immediately after his release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case:<\/strong> The ACE arrested the former federal minister in a case pertaining to alleged fake hirings to the fisheries department and causing losses to the treasury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fifth arrest:<\/strong> June 27 \u2014 He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1766777\/ex-lawmaker-re-arrested-under-3-mpo\">granted bail<\/a> by a sessions court in Mardan, only to be re-arrested under the 3-MPO yet again on the deputy commissioner\u2019s orders.<\/p>\n<p>Khan was eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1767107\">released<\/a> on July 27 on the PHC\u2019s directives after nearly 80 days of incarceration.
