{"id":23845,"date":"2023-11-12T13:02:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-12T13:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/ppps-mandviwalla-raises-concerns-about-pias-selected-privatisation\/"},"modified":"2023-11-12T13:02:52","modified_gmt":"2023-11-12T13:02:52","slug":"ppps-mandviwalla-raises-concerns-about-pias-selected-privatisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/ppps-mandviwalla-raises-concerns-about-pias-selected-privatisation\/","title":{"rendered":"PPP\u2019s Mandviwalla raises concerns about PIA\u2019s \u2018selected privatisation\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>PPP Senator Saleem Mandviwalla has raised concerns regarding Pakistan International Airlines\u2019 (PIA) \u201cselected privatisation\u201d, saying that the procedure was not being conducted in a transparent manner.<\/p>\n<p>The formal process for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1788332\">divestment<\/a> of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIACL) kicked off on Friday after the Board of Privatisation Commission appointed a financial adviser for the transaction.<\/p>\n<p>The airline has been plagued with crisis after crisis as Pakistan State Oil (PSO) has refused to supply fuel to the national airline due to payment issues. The weeks-long ordeal led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, pushing the national carrier to the verge of collapse.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1776844\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Speaking on the divestment process in an interview on <em>Dawn News\u2019<\/em> show <em>Doosra Rukh<\/em>, which will be aired tonight at 7pm, Mandviwalla said he had gotten to know about a meeting on the issue chaired by Interim Privatisation Minister Fawad Hasan Fawad.<\/p>\n<p>He alleged that PML-N stalwart Saad Rafique, who is also a former railways and aviation minister, had also attended the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow you tell me what is this? You (PML-N) are saying we (PPP) agreed to the privatisation and allowed the caretaker government to do so, but if a previous minister is attending that meeting then this is selected privatisation instead of being transparent,\u201d Mandviwalla said.<\/p>\n<p>The senator said he was concerned that the airline would be sold to \u201cwhoever you want however you want\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be no transparency and then obviously, the people we will protest. We will protest politically and PIA employees, everyone, will protest. People will go to court as well,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned whether he thought the PML-N was \u201con board\u201d with the privatisation process, Mandviwalla said: \u201c[Obviously], the PML-N is doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senator again questioned the capacity in which Rafique attended the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Asked to comment on the perception that the airline would be sold to those affiliated with the PML-N, the senator this was not a mere perception but \u201ca fact\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you do privatisation like this then you must have prepared a buyer and done an agreement with them that \u2018no one else will bid in the privatisation so we will give to you\u2019,\u201d Mandviwalla said.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated that privatisation carried out in such a manner would not be acceptable to the PPP and the party would protest against it.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1788056\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Earlier, PPP Senator Raza Rabbani had also opposes PIA\u2019s privatisation in all its forms and said: \u201cIt seems questionable that PIA planes were functioning normally when the fuel supply was abruptly halted and then resumed. There should be an investigation into the precise events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had sought an inquiry into PSO\u2019s refusal to supply fuel. \u201cThrough a deliberate campaign \u2026 PIA is being prepared for a loot sale,\u201d he had said.<\/p>\n<p>The PIA\u2019s recent descent came after the government said in August it would privatise the airline as part of a fiscal discipline plan agreed under an International Monetary Fund bailout.<\/p>\n<p>This made some stakeholders question whether the national airline was being prepared for \u201ca loot sale\u201d through a deliberate campaign.
