{"id":23809,"date":"2023-11-12T10:01:30","date_gmt":"2023-11-12T10:01:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/not-crime-to-make-mistakes-babar-azam-under-pressure-after-pakistan-crashes-out-of-world-cup\/"},"modified":"2023-11-12T10:01:30","modified_gmt":"2023-11-12T10:01:30","slug":"not-crime-to-make-mistakes-babar-azam-under-pressure-after-pakistan-crashes-out-of-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/not-crime-to-make-mistakes-babar-azam-under-pressure-after-pakistan-crashes-out-of-world-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Not crime to make mistakes\u2019: Babar Azam under pressure after Pakistan crashes out of World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Captain Babar Azam was described as \u201cdepressed\u201d and under pressure to save his job on Sunday after Pakistan crashed out of the Cricket World Cup, failing to make the semi-finals for a second successive tournament.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1788412\/new-zealand-into-world-cup-semi-finals-as-pakistan-crash-out\">93-run loss to England<\/a> sealed Pakistan\u2019s fate, ending the 1992 champions\u2019 already slim hopes of squeezing into the last four.<\/p>\n<p>Former captain and ex-chairman of the cricket board Ramiz Raja said that 29-year-old Azam was \u201cdepressed\u201d over the reaction at home.<\/p>\n<p>Fans\u2019 anger would have been made more acute by seeing arch-rivals India sweeping to eight wins out of eight, becoming the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1719401\">first team<\/a> to reach the semi-finals.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1788626\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Pakistan lost five of their nine games including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781048\">seven-wicket mauling<\/a> by India in front of more than 100,000 fans in Ahmedabad.<\/p>\n<p>That was India\u2019s eighth victory in eight World Cup games against their neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1783074\">lost to Afghanistan<\/a> for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Azam made 320 runs at the World Cup with four fifties at an average of 40 and remains the world\u2019s second-highest-ranked batsman. He has almost 13,000 runs in all international cricket.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was his captaincy in India which was questioned when he faced accusations of lacking aggression in field settings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get behind Babar. Babar is very, very close to me. He\u2019s a young guy that needs to be taken on the journey, he needs to be shown the ropes,\u201d said team director Mickey Arthur.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"time-to-grow\" href=\"#time-to-grow\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Time to grow\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Azam has been captain of the Test and ODI teams since 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s still learning all the time. We know he\u2019s a very, very fine batsman.<br \/>\nHe learns every day with his captaincy,\u201d added Arthur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to allow him the time to grow. And in order to do that, you make mistakes. It\u2019s not a crime to make mistakes as long as you learn from those mistakes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the despondency of fans at home, Azam and his team found sympathy in India.<\/p>\n<p>Only a smattering of fans \u2014 mostly expatriates \u2014 were at the venues as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779819\">visa complications<\/a> effectively meant a ban on those wishing to cross the border.<\/p>\n<p>As a Pakistan squad playing in India for the first time in seven years, they were virtually confined to hotel rooms once playing and training commitments were completed.<\/p>\n<p>Security details would accompany players and squad members if they wanted to venture outside their hotel.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1786112\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Arthur compared the situation to touring \u201cin Covid times\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Raja believes that Azam may become the first victim of bloodletting in a cricketing environment often plagued by infighting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much pressure on him that he may leave the job,\u201d Raja <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/w3ct1lcg\">told<\/a> the <em>BBC\u2019s Test Match Special<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBack home there has obviously been a massive backlash, as expected. The Pakistan media have targeted certain players, especially Babar Azam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just a World Cup so you have to take the heat somehow.
