{"id":23143,"date":"2023-11-10T09:44:06","date_gmt":"2023-11-10T09:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/six-months-to-may-9-how-pti-went-from-heights-of-popularity-to-facing-obscurity\/"},"modified":"2023-11-10T09:44:06","modified_gmt":"2023-11-10T09:44:06","slug":"six-months-to-may-9-how-pti-went-from-heights-of-popularity-to-facing-obscurity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/six-months-to-may-9-how-pti-went-from-heights-of-popularity-to-facing-obscurity\/","title":{"rendered":"Six months to May 9: How PTI went from heights of popularity to facing obscurity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>6 months after the riots that followed Imran Khan&#8217;s May 9 arrest, we look at what led to that fateful day and the aftermath.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>PTI leaders are <em>still<\/em> ditching their party in the wake of the events of May 9 riots that followed Imran Khan\u2019s arrest, which occurred half a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>One of the latest additions to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781417\/a-political-realignment-the-politicians-who-have-parted-ways-with-imrans-pti-since-may-9\">long list of defectors<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1780225\">Sadaqat Ali Abbasi<\/a>, who resigned from his party position and retired from politics during a live TV interview last month.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI leader had disappeared for several months, leading to speculations of being \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1775246\">picked up<\/a>\u2019 after May 9. Upon his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779739\/missing-pti-leader-back-home\">return<\/a>, he was quick to condemn the \u201cradical\u201d views against the establishment within his now former party and declared that he could no longer \u201cshoulder the burden of the events of May 9\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He is not the only one.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since the events of May 9, PTI leaders have been leaving the Imran Khan-led party. It is almost like clockwork how each member goes through the same process: getting \u2018picked up\u2019 or arrested, coming forward, condemning the May 9 violence, and then quitting the party \u2014 and\/or politics altogether. Wash, rinse, repeat.<\/p>\n<p>But how did the most popular party in the country go from widespread acceptance to the margins of obscurity within half a year? To understand this, <em>Dawn.com<\/em> traces the events that led to that infamous May day six months ago and the subsequent exodus of PTI members, as well as the party\u2019s unravelling.<\/p>\n<p>This piece will not be covering every single event that transpired but is a broad refresher to what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"beginning-of-the-end\" href=\"#beginning-of-the-end\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Beginning of the end<\/h2>\n<p>It can be argued that the beginning of the end started much before \u2014 when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1651602\">\u2018same page\u2019 tore<\/a> in Oct 2022 \u2014 the culmination of the gulf between the PTI and its benefactors was the no-confidence vote.<\/p>\n<p>Imran Khan became the first prime minister in Pakistan to be ousted from his position via a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1684168\">no-confidence vote<\/a>, executed under Article 95 of the Constitution on April 10 last year. A total of 174 out of the 342 members in the parliament voted in support of the opposition\u2019s motion of no confidence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one we had declared selected, the non-democratic burden this country was bearing for the past three years, today, April 10, 2022, welcome back to <em>purana<\/em> (old) Pakistan,\u201d said Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.<\/p>\n<p>On May 22, the PTI chairman announced his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1690955\">party\u2019s long march<\/a> towards Islamabad for two main demands: the dissolution of assemblies and a date for elections. The march would commence three days later and in so many words, told the military establishment to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1683238\">stick to its stated stance<\/a> of being \u201cneutral\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to give a little background of how we reached here. There was a foreign conspiracy against Pakistan from the US. In this regime change, they used locals \u2014 the most corrupt people, who were ready to become part of any conspiracy to save their corruption,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, we couldn\u2019t stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"PTI Chairman Imran Khan&#039;s Important Press Conference | Announces Long March Date | Dawn News\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DO5Tlnz3Uu8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>The march was called off by the PTI chief to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1716867\">prevent chaos<\/a>\u201d. \u201cWe held a peaceful protest on May 25 but they inflicted violence on us. And if I had not called it off then the next day there really would\u2019ve been discord and blood in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the significant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1700283\">Punjab by-elections<\/a>, PTI secured victory in a minimum of 15 seats out of the 20 that became vacant following the disqualification of PTI members who had supported Hamza Shehbaz\u2019s bid for the position of Punjab chief minister. In contrast, the ruling PML-N managed to win just four seats.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch    media--uneven  media--stretch\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">\u2014 Dawn.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Imran was booked in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1706168\/imran-faces-terrorism-charge-for-threatening-judge-police\">terrorism case<\/a> for \u201cthreatening\u201d a female judge and senior police officers in a public rally under Section 144. He was later given interim bail till Sept 7 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1706721\">an anti-terrorism court (ATC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The former premier faced disqualification in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1716149\">Toshakhana reference<\/a> due to a violation of Article 63(1)(p), which pertains to providing false statements and inaccurate declarations as determined by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), sparking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1716303\">protests in various cities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the ECP, Imran Khan did not disclose details of gifts in the statement of his assets and liabilities for the year 2018-19 and the sale proceeds.<\/p>\n<p>PTI leader Asad Umar tweeted that the decision would be challenged in the courts as a \u201cminus Imran would always remain a distant dream\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At this point, a message from Imran said, \u201cBy the time my message reaches you, I might have been put behind bars in an unfair case,\u201d as he urged his supporters to \u201ccome out\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1717163\">unexpected press conference<\/a>, Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum, the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), joined Lt Gen Babar Iftikhar, the then director-general of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), to discuss various topics, including the former prime minister\u2019s stance towards the military and the journalist Arshad Sharif\u2019s murder.<\/p>\n<p>This marked the first instance in Pakistan\u2019s history where the country\u2019s intelligence agency head addressed the media directly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am aware that you are surprised by my presence,\u201d he acknowledged, explaining that he was there on behalf of his institution and the officers sacrificing their lives. \u201cAs chief of this agency, I cannot remain silent when they are targeted for no reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on to reveal that in March, there had been \u201ca lot of pressure\u201d, but both the institution and the army chief (Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa) made the decision to confine the military to its constitutionally defined role.<\/p>\n<p>Lt Gen Anjum also disclosed that in March, Gen Bajwa was presented with an attractive proposal by the government in power at the time to extend his term. \u201cIt was made in front of me. He rejected it because he wanted the institution to move forward from a controversial role to a constitutional role.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking indirectly about the former prime minister, the ISI chief questioned that while citizens had the right to their opinion, why did \u201cyou praise him so much in the past if he was a traitor?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you see him as a traitor, then why do you meet him through the back door? [\u2026] Don\u2019t meet quietly at night through the back door and express your unconstitutional wishes but call [the army chief] a traitor in broad daylight. That\u2019s a big contradiction between your words and your actions,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Imran began his much anticipated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1717498\">\u201cHaqeeqi Azadi\u201d<\/a> march towards Islamabad with an uncompromising speech that directly criticised the country\u2019s top intelligence officers, including the head of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in Lahore, he accused the ISI director general of holding a \u201cpolitical presser\u201d and pointed out two other military officers for behaving like \u201cDirty Harry\u201d by allegedly abducting and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1718186\">torturing<\/a> Azam Swati, a party senator.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated that the sole solution to the myriad problems facing the nation lay in conducting free and fair early elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPakistan must have a government that is able enough to take decisions aimed at public welfare instead of the puppets working on the instructions of Washington,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>The former prime minister sustained injuries in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1718769\">shooting incident<\/a> when a suspect opened fire with an automatic pistol as the party\u2019s \u2018Haqeeqi Azadi\u2019 march reached Allahwala Chowk in Punjab\u2019s Wazirabad.<\/p>\n<p>During the shocking incident, a PTI supporter named Muazzam Nawaz lost his life, and 14 party leaders and workers, including Senator Faisal Javed Khan, Ahmad Nasir Chattha, and Omer Mayar, were injured.<\/p>\n<p>Imran, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his leg, was swiftly transported to Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital in Lahore.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/fawadchaudhry\/status\/1588162944231145472?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1588162944231145472%7Ctwgr%5Ec6e97ee8bad0caa66092a0e4abb9f416d85b8c8e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2Fnews%2F1718769\">Fawad Chaudhry<\/a>, then a senior leader of the PTI, described the incident as a meticulously planned assassination attempt on Imran Khan.<\/p>\n<p>As emotions ran wild, the party\u2019s Punjab President <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Dr_YasminRashid\/status\/1588138948223795200?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1588138948223795200%7Ctwgr%5Ec6e97ee8bad0caa66092a0e4abb9f416d85b8c8e%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dawn.com%2Fnews%2F1718769\">Dr Yasmin Rashid<\/a> issued a warning that \u201cImran Khan is our red line, and now you have crossed the line\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The assailant, as seen in a leaked police video, stated he \u201cmade every effort to target him (Imran) alone, with no harm to anyone else, because he was leading people astray,\u201d and insisted he was acting independently.<\/p>\n<p>Imran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751361\/imran-plans-more-rallies-warns-against-breach-of-sc-order\">accused<\/a> a senior military official of conspiring to murder him and would up the ante as time went on.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the state would come for Imran \u2014 described by his party as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1706015\">\u201cred line\u201d<\/a> that should not be crossed.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI chairman managed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1740527\">dodge being arrested<\/a> when Islamabad Police arrived at his Lahore residence in Zaman Park to serve him with court summons for his persistent non-attendance at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1734571\">Toshakhana court hearings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Islamabad police chief\u2019s earlier declaration that they wouldn\u2019t return without making the arrest, the presence of a larger number of PTI supporters compared to the police contingent prevented the arrest from taking place.<\/p>\n<p>Police made a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1742466\">second attempt<\/a> to arrest Imran, but were met with stiff resistance from his supporters. They lobbed petrol bombs, fired slingshots and wielded clubs while police fired volleys of teargas and employed water cannons against them \u2014 to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the Lahore High Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1743387\">ordered an end<\/a> to the operation.<\/p>\n<p>But a month later, Imran would be arrested.<\/p>\n<p>In a surprise move, Imran was taken into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751955\/crunch-time-for-pti-as-imran-held-nationwide-riots-erupt\">custody by paramilitary Rangers<\/a> at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751790\/imran-arrest-what-is-the-al-qadir-trust-case\">Al Qadir Trust case<\/a>. He was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1752554\">released<\/a> on May 12 when the IHC prohibited authorities from apprehending him in any legal matter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1751790\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1751955\/crunch-time-for-pti-as-imran-held-nationwide-riots-erupt\">Massive protests<\/a> erupted across the country, some of which enveloped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1752071\">army property and installations<\/a>. Protesters stormed the residence of the corps commander in Lahore and laid siege to a gate of the army\u2019s General Headquar\u00adters in Rawalpindi.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A view of a house in the cantonment area, which was set afire by supporters of Imran Khan during a protest against his arrest in Lahore. \u2014 Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Police fired teargas and water cannons to disperse Imran\u2019s sup\u00adp\u00adorters in Karachi and Lahore, while protesters blocked roads in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Pesha\u00adwar, Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately after this arrest, attacks were perpetrated on the army\u2019s properties and installations while slogans anti-army slogans were raised,\u201d said the military\u2019s media wing.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-3\/5  w-full  media--left    media--uneven  media--stretch\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Black smoke billows from a street installation set alight during a protest by PTI activists against the arrest of party chief Imran Khan in Peshawar.\u2014AFP\/file<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are well aware that behind it were orders, directives and complete pre-planning by some sinister party leadership,\u201d their <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispr.gov.pk\/press-release-detail?id=6533\">statement<\/a> added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one can be allowed to incite people and take the law into their hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also echoed the army\u2019s sentiment, saying that damaging public property was an \u201cact of terrorism\u201d and \u201cenmity\u201d towards the country and that \u201cthey will be given an exemplary punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"the-exodus-commences\" href=\"#the-exodus-commences\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>The exodus commences<\/h2>\n<p>Within days, recriminations and departures would take place. Anticipating a crackdown, many party leaders jumped ship.<\/p>\n<p>Three leaders, including former federal minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/amp\/1754032\">Aamer Mehmood Kiani<\/a>, MNA from Karachi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1753789\/mna-moulvi-parts-ways-with-pti-over-may-9-violence\">Mahmood Baqi Moulvi<\/a> and MPA in Sindh Assembly Dr Sanjay Gangwani, announced their decisions to part ways with the Imran-led party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t go along with this [PTI] party,\u201d he said. \u201cI demand the law-enforcement agencies to take action against all those [PTI] workers involved in the violent incidents of May 9,\u201d said Moulvi.<\/p>\n<p>The riots were an attempt to trigger a sort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/756615\/review-arab-spring-before-after\">\u2018Arab Spring\u2019<\/a> in Pakistan, he said, referring to a wave of pro-democracy protests and uprisings that took place in the Middle East and North Africa in 2010 and 2011, said Kiani.<\/p>\n<p>Malik Amin Aslam, Dr Muhammad Amjad and Dr Imran Ali Shah announced that they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1754304\/3-more-leaders-part-ways-with-pti-over-may-9-violence\">parting ways with the party<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They added that the PTI was becoming \u201ca reason for the country\u2019s destruction and hatred against institutions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Aslam, who remained an adviser to the PM on climate change when Imran Khan was the prime minister, said he spent 13 years with PTI. \u201cBut it is not possible for me to continue after the attacks on military installations and Jinnah House Lahore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Karachi, PTI\u2019s lawmaker in the Sindh Assembly, Shah, said the vandals \u201cdidn\u2019t even spare national institutions\u201d and the May 9 events changed his mind about his political future.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI leaders didn\u2019t give much weight to the party\u2019s third defection \u2014 Deputy Secretary Information Amjad \u2014 saying he had never won any election and the PTI wasn\u2019t inclined to give him a party ticket.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of the May 9 arson attacks, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi\u2019s confidant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755187\/parvez-elahis-confidant-quits-in-latest-blow-to-pti\">Wajahat Hussain<\/a> decided to part ways with PTI and rejoined his parent party \u2014 PML-Q.<\/p>\n<p>In a major blow to the party, former human rights minister and PTI stalwart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755265\">Shireen Mazari<\/a> quit the party and announced her retirement from \u201cactive politics\u201d citing personal reasons.<\/p>\n<p>She said her children and her health were her main priority and \u201cnothing else is important for me\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom today, I\u2019m not part of PTI or any active party because first [for me are] my family, my mother and kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the initial May 9 protests, at least 13 PTI leaders, including Mazari, were arrested under the Maintenance of Public Order ordinance. She was granted bail by courts on multiple occasions but was re-arrested immediately every time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755341\/under-pressure-more-pti-figures-jump-ship\">Fayyazul Hassan Chohan<\/a>, a former provincial minister and PTI spokesperson, also quit the PTI because he \u201ccould not imagine speaking against the army\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chohan also lashed out at his former boss and claimed that he had developed differences with the PTI chairman for the last year and that the doors of Banigala and Zaman Park were closed for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost one year ago, I sent a WhatsApp to Imran and also forwarded it to a journalist for the record. I don\u2019t want to remain in a party which never cared about me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Makhdoom Iftikhar Ali Gilani, a former PTI MPA from Uch Sharif, also announced his decision to quit the party in the backdrop of the May 9 violence in the country.<\/p>\n<p>A former PTI MPA from Khanewal and existing ticket-holder from PP-209, Abdul Razzaq Niazi, in a press conference in Lahore, also parted ways with the PTI.<\/p>\n<p>In Karachi, another duo of PTI MPAs, Omar Omari and Bilal Ahmed Ghaffar, also announced they were quitting the party while condemning May 9.<\/p>\n<p>In another significant blow to the PTI, the party\u2019s senior vice president and spokesperson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755516\">Fawad Chaudhry<\/a> announced that he was \u201cparting ways\u201d with former prime minister Imran Khan.<\/p>\n<p>Taking to X, formerly Twitter, he said he had resigned from his party position and had \u201cdecided to take a break from politics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755610\">Asad Umar<\/a>, a close aide and head of Imran\u2019s economic team, stepped down from his party office in light of the crackdown on the former ruling party.<\/p>\n<p>According to Umar, he was not quitting the party offices \u201cunder pressure\u201d \u2014 a statement in contrast to claims made by the PTI chairman, who accused the powers that be of coercing members to exit.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">ISLAMABAD: PTI leader Asad Umar grimaces at a journalist\u2019s question during his presser. \u2014Tanveer Shahzad \/ White Star<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>He said he had no pressure to quit the party and that is why he decided to resign from party positions and will remain associated with the party.<\/p>\n<p>At least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755858\">nine party leaders<\/a> including Maleeka Bukhari, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and his wife Musarrat, Malik Akram Kanhon, Javed Ansari, Dr Muhammad Afzal, Chaudhry Ehsanul Haq, Ch Jehanzeb Rasheed, and Saeed Akbar Niwani parted ways with Imran.<\/p>\n<p>Bukhari said PTI leaders and workers \u201chad crossed a red line on May 9\u201d and demanded action against those who attacked military installations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was our failure that we could not control the workers. Mob should not have entered the military installations and I feel bad when I see the pictures of martyrs,\u201d Cheema said.<\/p>\n<p>Former Punjab cabinet members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1756140\">Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan and Murad Raas<\/a>, among a dozen leaders, announced their decision to leave the party as they did not support the May 9 attacks on state buildings and army installations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that the martyrs \u2026 their love and the country\u2019s respect are a part of our faith. Those who disrespected martyrs attacked Pakistan\u2019s foundation and ideology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImran Khan and Pakistan can\u2019t function together,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1755939\">Awan said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Former Sindh governor Imran Ismail announced that he is leaving the PTI and resigning from all party positions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have decided that I am resigning from positions of the PTI, as I am the additional secretary general and a member of the core committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am also leaving the PTI \u2026 Khan <em>sahib<\/em> I bid adieu to you and PTI.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PTI Sindh President Ali Haider Zaidi also announced his decision to \u201cquit\u201d politics and resign from positions within the PTI, describing it as a \u201cdifficult decision\u201d that he arrived at after \u201cextensive deliberation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In a video message, Zaidi affirmed his commitment to serving Pakistan and emphasised that his initial purpose for joining politics was to contribute to the betterment of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI suffered a major setback when the party\u2019s provincial president, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1757420\/khattak-resigns-as-pti-provincial-president\">Pervez Khattak<\/a>, announced in a press conference his decision to step down from his party position.<\/p>\n<p>A PTI representative, who preferred not to be named, claimed that Khattak, a former federal minister, had only resigned as PTI president of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, just like Asad Umar, and will remain part of the party.<\/p>\n<p>The PTI faced another setback as its Karachi chapter president, Akram Cheema, revealed his departure from the party. He had been appointed as city president by PTI chairman Imran Khan a month before, succeeding Aftab Siddiqi, who left the party after the May 9 episode, primarily due to \u2018difference of opinion.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He was picked up by law enforcement agencies and after a gap of around one week, he was arrested in two cases about the May 9 riots. He was given bail after two days and he quit the party while condemning attacks on military institutions.<\/p>\n<p>PTI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1764333\">terminated the basic party membership<\/a> of its former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president Pervez Khattak after he failed to respond to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1760997\">show-cause notice<\/a> that sought an explanation for \u201cinciting\u201d members to leave the party.<\/p>\n<p>The termination letter, shared by the PTI on X, said Khattak had not provided a \u201csatisfactory reply within the given stipulated time\u201d to the notice issued to him regarding \u201ccontacting party members and inciting them to leave the party\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, therefore, you are served with this notice of termination from your basic membership of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf,\u201d it stated, adding that Khattak had been terminated with \u201cimmediate effect\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Senior PTI leader and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779400\">federal minister Usman Dar<\/a>, whose whereabouts had been unknown for three weeks, resurfaced in a pre-recorded interview, televised, where he announced a parting of ways with Imran\u2019s party, alleging that the former prime minister was the \u2018mastermind of the May 9 riots\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Dar was reportedly picked up from Karachi in the second week of September.<\/p>\n<p>Former minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781413\">Farrukh Habib<\/a>, whose whereabouts had been unknown after his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1778481\">arrest from Gwadar<\/a> last month, resurfaced in a press conference, where he announced parting ways with Imran Khan\u2019s party.<\/p>\n<p>He also joined the newly formed Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP).<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"the-fragmentation-of-pti\" href=\"#the-fragmentation-of-pti\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>The fragmentation of PTI<\/h2>\n<p>Jahangir Khan Tareen, once a close aide of the PTI chief, launched a new party, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1758637\">Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP)<\/a> on June 6 with several other PTI defectors \u2014 including those who left in the aftermath of the May 9 incidents \u2014 by his side.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"\ud83d\udd34\ud835\udc01\ud835\udc2b\ud835\udc1e\ud835\udc1a\ud835\udc24\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc27\ud835\udc20 \ud835\udc0b\ud835\udc22\ud835\udc2f\ud835\udc1e : Jahangir Tareen &amp; Aleem Khan Announce New Party | \ud835\udc03\ud835\udc00\ud835\udc16\ud835\udc0d \ud835\udc0d\ud835\udc04\ud835\udc16\ud835\udc12 \ud835\udc04\ud835\udc0d\ud835\udc06\ud835\udc0b\ud835\udc08\ud835\udc12\ud835\udc07\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b5s0WnXWL_U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Tareen said the events of May 9 had changed the politics of Pakistan and should never happen again.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cSo we have gathered here today. We will collectively try to steer Pakistan \u2026 out of the quagmire. Our country needs this today. We will together heal the wounds inflicted on Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1758584\">Former PTI stalwarts<\/a> Fawad Chaudhry, Ali Zaidi, Imran Ismail, Mahmood Maulvi, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Ajmal Wazir, Nauraiz Shakoor, Fayyazul Hasan Chohan, Amir Mehmood Kayani and former PTI financer Aleem Khan also joined Tareen\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few days later, Khattak launched his own breakaway faction of the party by the name of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1765262\">Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Parliamentarians<\/a> (PTI-P).<\/p>\n<p>In a video of the gathering, Khattak was seen saying that like-minded former parliamentarians from KP had gathered today and after consultation, \u201cwe agreed to decide a future political strategy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was mutually decided that we will lay the foundation of a new party, which will be named Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Parliamentarians.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  media--embed  \">\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Pervez Khattak Launches Breakaway Faction PTI \u2013 Parliamentarians | Developing\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/u5i1ILSTxb4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>According to a handout issued by the party, Khattak is the new party\u2019s chief while \u201cmore than 57\u201d ex-PTI MPAs also joined the party.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"imrans-woes-continue\" href=\"#imrans-woes-continue\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Imran\u2019s woes continue<\/h2>\n<p>Punjab police <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1768528\">arrested Imran<\/a> from his Lahore residence after his conviction in the Toshkhana case. He was sentenced to three years in jail and fined Rs100,000 and has been in Attock jail since then.<\/p>\n<p>IHC suspended the Toshakhana sentence, but Imran was not released as it emerged that he was already on judicial remand in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1772860\">cipher case<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The FIA accuses him and Shah Mahmood Qureshi of breaching the Official Secrets Act in the matter of an allegedly missing diplomatic document that supposedly contained a US threat to oust Imran Khan from power.
