James Spratt recalls dashing home from school as a teenager to band together online with friends to do battle in \u201cCall of Duty\u201d, the global video game juggernaut that never gets old.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The franchise deployed by Activision Blizzard 20 years ago helped define the military shooter game genre, winning millions of fans and raking more than $30 billion.<\/p>\n

And Spratt, to the amazement of his dad, now makes a living sharing his \u201cCoD\u201d sniper skills on his YouTube channel from his home in Britain.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt school, we were racing home basically to get a squad of six together because if you missed out on being with your friends, you were playing by yourself,\u201d said Spratt, who recently turned 30 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was something about that game that just kept me coming back every year; I was hooked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Activision published the original \u201cCall of Duty\u201d created by Infinity Ward studio in October of 2003 and has released installments at an annual cadence that continues with the arrival of \u201cModern Warfare 3\u201d on November 10.<\/p>\n

The yearly release cycle is \u201calmost this ingrained holiday\u201d and became a \u201csecret sauce\u201d for the franchise, \u201cCall of Duty\u201d general manager Johanna Faries told AFP.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlayers almost set their watch to when a new \u2018Call of Duty\u2019 is coming to the forefront,\u201d Faries said.<\/p>\n

Wedbush entertainment software analyst Michael Pachter described the decision to create annual installments of the game as the \u201cbiggest driver\u201d behind its success, combined with varying content between World War II, modern warfare, and \u201cblack ops\u201d secret missions.<\/p>\n

All the talk<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another driver of success for the franchise was continually refining an online, multi-player aspect that won over players like young Spratt and his friends who turned it into group fun.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t just the game itself, but it\u2019s what \u2018Call of Duty\u2019 represented \u2013 each year you had a massive community that was continuing to grow,\u201d Spratt said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou could talk about it with someone down in the garage or down at the shop or people online \u2013 everyone just seemed to know what \u2018Call of Duty\u2019 was.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spratt said his partner has nieces and nephews playing the game, along with her brother-in-law.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel like it was a teenager thing when I started, but now you\u2019ve got the old gamers and the new gamers,\u201d Spratt said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s all ages now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2013 Guns and Goosebumps \u2013<\/p>\n

A Call of Duty forum at Reddit has 1.2 million members, bonding over memories of favorite moments in past installments and opinions on the newest version, which some were able to access early.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will always get goosebumps whenever I hit the \u2018Of their own accord\u2019 mission in Modern Warfare 2,\u201d wrote a forum member self-described as someone in their 20s who spends 90 percent of their free time playing video games.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go from absolutely decimating a Gulag with the navy, to an absolute hellscape and the music perfectly sets the tone.\u201d<\/p>\n

After debuting as a relatively small game for personal computers, the franchise catapulted with the launch of \u201cCall of Duty 2\u201d that came out with the Microsoft Xbox 360 consoles in 2005, according to Circana video game analyst Mat Piscatella.<\/p>\n

More than 70 percent of people who bought an Xbox 360 in the weeks after its launch also bought \u201cCall of Duty,\u201d said Piscatella.<\/p>\n

Two years later, \u201cCall of Duty 4: Modern Warfare\u201d became a an even greater blockbuster for the franchise due to improvements to multi-player capabilities, according to the analyst.<\/p>\n

\u201cCall of Duty is one of only a handful of what can be referred to as \u2018forever games\u2019 that offer enough compelling content and community features to make these games the default go-to for players whenever they want to play or hang out with friends and family in game,\u201d Piscatella said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhole books could be written about this franchise and its impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Call of Duty has been the best-selling premium video game franchise in the United States annually for more than a decade, and the installment available Friday will likely be no different, according to Piscatella.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really proud,\u201d Faries said.<\/p>\n

Video games are, \u201carguably the most dynamic global form of entertainment right now and to have \u2018Call of Duty\u2019 as a leading franchise in that conversation is an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
