Sri Lanka batsman Angelo Mathews demanded \u201cjustice\u201d from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and branded Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan \u201ca cheat\u201d on social media after becoming the first player to be \u2018timed out<\/a>\u2019 in international cricket at the World Cup on Monday.<\/p>\n

Mathews had already made his feelings clear in the press conference after the defeat<\/a> that ended Sri Lanka\u2019s hopes of progressing at the World Cup, saying Shakib\u2019s appeal for the controversial dismissal had been \u201cdisgraceful\u201d.<\/p>\n

The 36-year-old had breached the World Cup rule that a new batter must be ready to face a delivery within two minutes of a wicket falling.<\/p>\n

Mathews said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had been in place with seconds to spare before the chinstrap on his helmet broke requiring a new one to be brought out, backing up his position with time-stamped video screenshots.<\/p>\n

\u201cVideo evidence shows I still had five more seconds even after the helmet gave way!\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan the fourth umpire rectify this please? I mean safety is paramount as I just couldn\u2019t face the bowler without a helmet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is clear cheating, I want justice,\u201d he added in another post.<\/p>\n

That directly contradicted fourth umpire Adrian Holdstock.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the incident this afternoon, the batter wasn\u2019t ready to receive the ball within those two minutes even before the strap became an issue for him,\u201d he said in an on-pitch interview after the game at Arun Jaitley Stadium.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a batsman, I think you need to make sure you have all your equipment in place \u2026 because you actually have to be ready to receive the ball within two minutes, not ready to prepare or take your guard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\u2018Spirit of cricket\u2019<\/h2>\n

There was plenty of support for Mathews, with former South Africa bowler Dale Steyn saying the incident \u201cwasn\u2019t cool\u201d, Australia\u2019s Usman Khawaja calling it \u201cridiculous\u201d, and former India captain Gautam Gambhir branding it \u201cpathetic\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t enjoy what I saw out there,\u201d Pakistan great Waqar Younis said in a TV broadcast.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat wasn\u2019t good for the spirit of cricket. I am old school and I think that was a lot of drama to get Angelo Mathews out,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif was among those who blamed Shakib for appealing for the dismissal and not reconsidering even after being asked by the on-field umpires whether he wanted to continue with it.<\/p>\n

\u201cShakib should believe in winning, but not \u2018winning at all cost\u2019. That was shameful,\u201d he posted on X.<\/p>\n

Shakib had defended his decision in his post-match press conference, saying his actions were within the rules and he had no regrets.<\/p>\n

He was supported by former England captain Michael Vaughan, who said in his experience the much vaunted \u201cspirit of the game\u201d had always been more honoured in the breach.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Shakib is going to get loads of people, particularly on social media, saying he broke the spirit of the game, he\u2019s a disgrace,\u201d he told Cricbuzz<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s well within his rights, it\u2019s the laws of the game. It\u2019s utter nonsense talking about the spirit of the game, the umpire\u2019s got it right,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
