{"id":2243,"date":"2023-09-09T13:25:07","date_gmt":"2023-09-09T13:25:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/morocco-quake-death-toll-crosses-1000\/"},"modified":"2023-09-09T13:25:07","modified_gmt":"2023-09-09T13:25:07","slug":"morocco-quake-death-toll-crosses-1000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/morocco-quake-death-toll-crosses-1000\/","title":{"rendered":"Morocco quake death toll crosses 1,000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The death toll from Morocco\u2019s deadliest earthquake in decades has risen to 1,037, it was reported on Saturday, causing widespread damage and sending terrified residents and tourists scrambling to safety in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n<p>The state television further quoted the interior ministry as saying that more than 1,200 people were injured in the quake in Morocco\u2019s High Atlas mountains late on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>The 6.8-magnitude quake struck the mountainous area 72 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of tourist hotspot Marrakesh at 11:11pm (10:11pm GMT) on Friday, the US Geological Survey reported.<\/p>\n<p>Strong tremors were also felt in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right    media--uneven  media--stretch\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Map locating the earthquake that shook Morocco late on Friday. \u2014 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe felt a very violent tremor, and I realised it was an earthquake,\u201d Abdelhak El Amrani, a 33-year-old in Marrakesh, told <em>AFP<\/em> by telephone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could see buildings moving. We don\u2019t necessarily have the reflexes for this type of situation. Then I went outside and there were a lot of people there.<\/p>\n<p>People were all in shock and panic. The children were crying and the parents were distraught.\u201c \u201cThe power went out for 10 minutes, and so did the (telephone) network, but then it came back on,\u201d he added. \u201cEveryone decided to stay outside.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"unbearable-screams\" href=\"#unbearable-screams\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>\u2018Unbearable\u2019 screams<\/h2>\n<p>Faisal Baddour, an engineer, said he felt the earthquake three times in his building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople went out into the street just after this total panic, and there are families who are still sleeping outside because we were so scared of the force of this earthquake,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was as if a train was passing close to our houses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Frenchman Michael Bizet, 43, who owns three traditional riad houses in Marrakesh\u2019s old town, told <em>AFP<\/em> that he had been in bed at the time of the quake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought my bed was going to fly away. I went out into the street half-naked and immediately went to see my riads. It was total chaos, a real catastrophe, madness,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 43-year-old shared video of piles of rubble from collapsed walls in the streets.<\/p>\n<p>Footage on social media also showed part of a minaret collapsed on Jemaa el-Fna square in the historic city.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">People look at debris in the aftermath of an earthquake in Marrakech, Morocco on September 9 in this screen grab from a social media video in this picture. \u2014 Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>An <em>AFP<\/em> correspondent saw hundreds of people flocking to the square to spend the night for fear of aftershocks, some with blankets while others slept on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Houda Outassaf, a local resident, told <em>AFP<\/em> he was walking around the square when the ground began to shake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a truly staggering sensation. We\u2019re safe and sound, but I\u2019m still in shock,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have at least 10 members of my family who died\u2026 I can hardly believe it, as I was with them no more than two days ago.\u201d Fayssal Badour, another Marrakesh resident, told <em>AFP<\/em> he was driving when the earthquake hit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI stopped and realised what a disaster it was\u2026 The screaming and crying was unbearable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The interior ministry said authorities have \u201cmobilised all the necessary resources to intervene and help the affected areas\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">People gather on a street in Casablanca, following a powerful earthquake in Morocco on Saturday (Sep 9). \u2014 Reuters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The regional blood transfusion centre in Marrakesh has called on residents to donate blood for those injured.<\/p>\n<p>In the town of Al-Haouz, near the epicentre of the quake, a family was trapped in the rubble after their house collapsed, local media reported.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"significant-damage-likely\" href=\"#significant-damage-likely\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Significant damage likely<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWe heard screams at the time of the tremor,\u201d a resident of Essaouira, 200km west of Marrakesh, told <em>AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1740538\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPeople are in the squares, in the cafes, preferring to sleep outside.<br \/>\nPieces of facades have fallen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The USGS PAGER system, which provides preliminary assessments on the impact of earthquakes, issued a red alert for economic losses, saying extensive damage is probable and the disaster is likely widespread.<\/p>\n<p>Past events with this alert level have required a national or international level response, according to the US government agency.<\/p>\n<p>Internet connectivity was disrupted in Marrakesh due to power cuts, according to global internet monitor NetBlocks.<\/p>\n<p>Moroccan media reported it was the most powerful earthquake to hit the country to date.<\/p>\n<p>The earthquake was also felt in neighbouring Algeria, where the Algerian Civil Defence said it had not caused any damage or casualties.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, at least 628 people were killed and 926 injured when a quake hit Al Hoceima in northeastern Morocco, and in 1960 a magnitude 6.7 quake in Agadir killed more than 12,000.<\/p>\n<p>The 7.3-magnitude El Asnam earthquake in neighbouring Algeria in 1980 was regionally one of the most destructive earthquakes in recent history.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"fo-reaches-out-to-embassy-in-rabat\" href=\"#fo-reaches-out-to-embassy-in-rabat\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>FO reaches out to embassy in Rabat<\/h2>\n<p>Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said: \u201cThe people and Government of Pakistan stand in solidarity with the Kingdom of Morocco and express their heartfelt sympathies and condolences at the tragic loss of lives in yesterday\u2019s earthquake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that Pakistan has also conveyed \u201cour offer of assistance to Morocco\u201d and that \u201cour embassy in Rabat has reached out to the Pakistani community to inquire about their safety\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs per initial reports, all Pakistani nationals are safe,\u201d she added. \u201cWe will continue to monitor the situation to facilitate them in the wake of this tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Pakistani embassy in Morocco said in a post on X that Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan, officers, staff and the Pakistani community there expressed their deepest condolence and were \u201cready to assist in any manner required\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Khan, Pakistan\u2019s diplomat there, also reiterated Baloch\u2019s statement: \u201cThus far  Pakistanis in Morocco are reported safe amidst devastation claiming over 800 lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Government of Pakistan stands by ready to assist as required,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"condolences-pour-in\" href=\"#condolences-pour-in\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Condolences pour in<\/h2>\n<p>Prime Minister Anwaar ul Haq Kakar, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said \u201cOur hearts ache for those affected by the severe earthquake in Morocco. Pakistan extends its hand in unity and support to Morocco in this trying time\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>President Arif Alvi also expressed his condolences on the natural disaster and solidarity with the affected people of Morocco. He prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.<\/p>\n<p>Caretaker Human Rights Minister Khalil George also <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/radio.gov.pk\/09-09-2023\/president-pm-express-grief-over-damages-caused-by-severe-earthquake-in-morocco\">sympathised<\/a> with the affected families for the loss of lives and property. He stated that he is \u201cwith the government and people of Morocco in this hour of trial\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said, \u201cMy heart goes out to brotherly people of Morocco affected by the devastating earthquake.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Extending his \u201cdeepest condolences to the victims and their families\u201d, he called for the people to stand \u201ctogether in solidarity with Morocco and support those in need\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>US President Joe Biden expressed his sympathy for the victims, adding the United States was \u201cready to provide any necessary assistance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Morocco,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this terrible hardship. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a similar \u201cmessage of condolence\u201d to Morocco, state media reported, joining a chorus of international support for the North African country in the wake of a devastating earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn September 9, President Xi Jinping sent a message of condolence to King Mohammed VI of Morocco over the severe earthquake in Morocco,\u201d official broadcaster <em>CCTV<\/em> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am shocked to learn that a strong earthquake has occurred in your distinguished country, causing great casualties and property damage,\u201d said Xi, according to <em>CCTV<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of the Chinese government and people, I would like to express my deep grief for the victims and sincere condolences to the families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust that under the leadership of His Majesty the King, the Moroccan government and people will be able to overcome the impact of this disaster and rebuild their homeland at an early date,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed similar sentiments and said, in a message to Morocco\u2019s king, \u201cWe share the pain and the mourning of the friendly Moroccan people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said \u201cMy thoughts are with everyone affected by the terrible earthquake in Morocco last night. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister James Cleverly said they will help Morocco \u201cin whatever way we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDevastating news of a substantial earthquake just outside Marrakesh, Morocco,\u201d he said in a post on X. \u201cWe stand ready to help our Moroccan friends in whatever way we can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also offered his condolences. Terming it as bad news for the country, he said, \u201cIn these difficult hours, our thoughts are with the victims of the devastating earthquake. Our sympathy goes to all those affected by this natural disaster\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was \u201cpained\u201d by news of the quake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the people of Morocco,\u201d Modi said. \u201cCondolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. India is ready to offer all possible assistance to Morocco in this difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered his condolences on Saturday to relatives of the victims of the \u201cterrible\u201d earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll my solidarity and support to the people of Morocco in the wake of this terrible earthquake\u2026 Spain is with the victims of this tragedy and its families,\u201d he wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>The President of France, Emmanuel Macron said \u201cWe are all devastated after the terrible earthquake in Morocco. France stands ready to help with first aid\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna expressed \u201csolidarity\u201d with the North African country as well.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s top diplomat added she was \u201cthinking\u201d about the victims and their families, in a message on X.<\/p>\n<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also offered support to Morocco after \u201cthis devastating earthquake\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will support our Moroccan brothers in every way in this difficult hour,\u201d he said in a message on X.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the African Union Commission also expressed \u201cgreat pain\u201d over the devastating earthquake.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learnt with great sadness of the tragic consequences of the earthquake that hit the kingdom of Morocco,\u201d Moussa Faki Mahamat said, expressing his \u201csincere condolences\u201d to the king, the Moroccan people and the families of the victims.<\/p>\n<p>Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she \u201clearned with the grief of the tragic toll\u201d from the quake and pointed to \u201cItaly\u2019s willingness to support Morocco in this emergency\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed sympathy \u201cwith the Moroccan people in the face of the terrible earthquake\u201d, while top EU diplomat Joseph Borrell said the bloc is ready to provide Morocco \u201cthe assistance it wishes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Swiss President Alain Berset expressed his condolences. The country\u2019s foreign ministry said it activated a crisis cell and is evaluating sending aid.<\/p>\n<p>Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said his country stands by Morocco \u201cin these difficult moments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his \u201cdeepest condolences to HM King Mohammed VI and all Moroccans for the lives lost in the horrible earthquake.\u201d \u201cUkraine stands in solidarity with Morocco during this tragic time,\u201d he said on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu \u201cinstructed all government bodies and forces to provide any necessary assistance to the people of Morocco, including the preparations for sending an aid delegation to the area,\u201d a statement from his office said.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest show of support in the wake of the 2020 Abraham Accords that saw Israel normalise ties with a number of Arab countries, including Morocco.<\/p>\n<p>The president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, said we \u201cstand with the Kingdom of Morocco during this difficult time and wish a speedy recovery ahead to all those affected\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also ordered an \u201cair bridge to deliver critical relief\u201d to the country, according to state news agency <em>WAM<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Saudi Arabia and Egypt also issued statements expressing their condolences and support after the quake.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary-general of the Jeddah-based Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Hissein Brahim Taha, prayed for \u201cmercy on the victims and a speedy recovery for the injured\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the quake as \u201cheartbreaking\u201d, adding: \u201cWe stand ready to support the immediate health needs. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>Apart from world leaders, Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam said he was disturbed after seeing the visuals coming out from Morocco. \u201cI share my deepest condolences.
