{"id":1951,"date":"2023-09-08T19:16:15","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T19:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/after-slums-and-monkeys-delhi-removes-stray-dogs-from-streets-as-g20-summit-nears\/"},"modified":"2023-09-08T19:16:15","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T19:16:15","slug":"after-slums-and-monkeys-delhi-removes-stray-dogs-from-streets-as-g20-summit-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/after-slums-and-monkeys-delhi-removes-stray-dogs-from-streets-as-g20-summit-nears\/","title":{"rendered":"After slums and monkeys, Delhi removes stray dogs from streets as G20 summit nears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Hundreds of stray dogs that roam the streets of the Indian capital Delhi are being rounded up by authorities and moved to shelters in the run-up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774756\/g20-gathers-in-india-with-chinas-president-xi-absent\">G20 summit<\/a> this weekend, according to animal activists and <em>Reuters<\/em> witnesses.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1773183\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Authorities have already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1774183\/many-slums-disappear-from-new-delhi-ahead-of-g20-summit\">cleared many slums<\/a> in the city and put up cutouts of langurs to scare away monkeys from public spaces ahead of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>The G20 summit, the biggest-ever gathering of world leaders in the Indian capital, will be attended by US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida among others.<\/p>\n<p>The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) did not directly link the removal of stray dogs to the summit, stating that the canines are being picked up \u201conly on an urgent need basis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ambulances being used for the roundup of strays that were seen by <em>Reuters<\/em>, however, displayed \u201cOn Duty G-20\u201d boards.<\/p>\n<p>The national capital territory of Delhi has over 60,000 stray dogs, according to government data, which are fed and doted upon by many of its 20 million residents, but instances of them attacking people are not uncommon.<\/p>\n<p>The MCD, in August, had issued an order for the removal of stray dogs \u201cfrom the vicinity of prominent locations in view of the G-20 summit\u201d, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1768742\/delhi-halts-plan-to-hide-street-dogs-for-g20-summit\">withdrew the directions<\/a> two days later following a backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Animal activists say the civic body then started capturing stray dogs \u201cin an inhumane manner\u201d last week, without using methods like \u201cnet catching or hand catching\u201d mandated by guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 1,000 dogs have been rounded up so far from areas like the airport and the G20 venue, they said.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reuters<\/em>\u2019 witnesses saw MCD teams capturing dogs using rods with a loop at one end. The animals were then dragged to ambulances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat India is doing is ironic given the theme of the G20 \u2014 one earth, one family, one future. It is hypocritical to talk of a shared future when we do not make room for our co-beings,\u201d said Ambika Shukla, trustee of People for Animals, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).<\/p>\n<p>Sanjay Mohapatra, founder of the House of Stray Animals NGO, termed the action \u201cneedless\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf delegates see people feeding stray dogs, it will actually create a good impression of the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The MCD, in a statement, said the captured dogs were being tracked and would be released back from where they were taken, but did not give a timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the dogs are safe and comfortable with necessary medical help available to them,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Friendicoes, one of the groups working with the MCD to round up the canines, said it has picked up 234 dogs using nets and moved them to its three shelters in the city.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reuters<\/em> images showed the animals inside cages, with a whiteboard hanging at the entrance detailing the token number assigned to each of them, and detailing their gender and fur colour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have stopped the work now since we have reached full capacity.
