At least 13 people were killed and around 50 injured when two trains collided in southeast India, officials said on Monday, updating an earlier toll of eight.<\/p>\n

The accident occurred late on Sunday after one of the passenger trains overshot a signal between the towns of Alamanda and Kantakapalle in Andhra Pradesh state.<\/p>\n

A preliminary investigation found that \u201chuman error\u201d had led to the collision, the railway ministry said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThirteen passengers have been killed and 50 others are injured. Rescue operations are going on,\u201d top local government official Nagalakshmi S. told reporters.<\/p>\n

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had spoken with the country\u2019s railway minister about the \u201cunfortunate\u201d derailment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAuthorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected,\u201d Modi wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

India has one of the world\u2019s largest rail networks and has seen several disasters over the years, the worst in 1981 when a train derailed while crossing a bridge in Bihar state, killing an estimated 800 people.<\/p>\n

In June, a three-train collision killed<\/a> nearly 300 people in Odisha state.
\nIn August, at least nine people were killed<\/a> when a coach parked in southern India caught fire as a passenger tried to make tea.<\/p>\n
