Jawaher al-Aqraa is one of the hundreds of thousands of Gazans who have fled or lost homes in Israeli raids.<\/p>\n

Jawaher al-Aqraa says it will be a \u201cmiracle\u201d if she survives Israel\u2019s bombardment of Gaza, but in the meantime, she is singing to \u201cblock out\u201d the roar of fighter jets over the Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old English teacher is one of hundreds of thousands of Gazans who have fled or lost their homes as Israel\u2019s air raids have intensified<\/a> since the October 7 Hamas attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Now she is with her brother in the Deir al-Balah refugee camp where thousands of families live in fear of air strikes.<\/p>\n

The 28-year-old English teacher is one of hundreds of thousands of Gazans who have fled or lost their homes as Israel\u2019s air raids. \u2014AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI have survived wars and a million escalations,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith this war, I have the impression that all I do is await my turn to die. If I survive, it will be a miracle.\u201d<\/p>\n

AFP<\/em> first spoke with Aqraa last year as part of a project on young people across the Middle East and how they use culture to counter crisis.<\/p>\n

She said music is her \u201cescape route\u201d from the daily trials faced by the 2.4 million inhabitants of the coastal enclave blockaded by Israel and Egypt.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I try to block out the noise of the shelling and drones by singing, but the strikes become louder so I stop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI recite the shahada<\/em> (the profession of faith) and then I start again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Mental balance\u2019<\/h2>\n

Aqraa said the scenes she has witnessed in Gaza \u201chave filled me with anger\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I can do is sing to express my feelings and those of people who have lost their families and their homes. My mental balance comes from music and singing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The young woman said three of her friends had been killed in Israeli air strikes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis war cannot be described with words. It cannot be compared to what happened before.\u201d<\/p>\n

Surrounded by applauding children and her brother, Aqraa plays the violin and sings a song in English composed by friends.<\/p>\n

Aqraa says the loss of friends to Israeli air strikes has left her angry but her music has allowed her to restore her \u201cmental balance\u201d. \u2014 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cI am invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable. They knock me down and I get up again,\u201d she sang. \u201cI was born to be free. I am Palestinian.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking afterwards, she said she wanted to travel and sing to \u201cspread the Palestinian cause\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe bombing has not affected my determination,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n
