\u2018The Hunger Games\u2019<\/em> is set to open at a London theatre next year in the first live stage adaptation of Suzanne Collins\u2019 novels and the hugely successful film franchise.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Irish playwright, screenwriter and director Conor McPherson has adapted for theatre the first book in Collins\u2019s young adult dystopian trilogy and the first film from \u2018The Hunger Games\u2019<\/em> Lionsgate movie franchise, which starred Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence as heroine Katniss Everdeen.<\/p>\n

Matthew Dunster, playwright, director and former associate director at Shakespeare\u2019s Globe Theatre, will direct.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo receive Suzanne Collins\u2019 blessing to adapt \u2018The Hunger Games\u2019<\/em> for the stage is both humbling and inspiring. She has created a classic story which continues to resonate now more than ever,\u201d McPherson said in a statement on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a world where the truth itself seems increasingly up for grabs, \u2018The Hunger Games\u2019<\/em> beautifully expresses values of resilience, self-reliance and independent moral inquiry for younger people especially.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is turbocharged storytelling of the highest order and I\u2019m hugely excited to bring it to a new generation of theatregoers and to Suzanne Collins\u2019 longstanding and devoted fans.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins said she was \u2018very excited\u2019 to be collaborating with McPherson and Dunster \u2018as they bring their dynamic and innovative interpretation of \u2018The Hunger Games\u2019<\/em> to the London stage\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Lionsgate \u2018Hunger Games\u2019<\/em> movies, which brought to the big screen Collins\u2019 tale of the oppressed residents of Panem, forced to compete in an annual televised gladiatorial contest to the death while the wealthy watched on, grossed more than $2 billion at the global box office.<\/p>\n

Prequel \u2018The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes\u2019<\/em>, set 64 years before the first instalment of Collins\u2019 trilogy and starring Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth and Viola Davis, is scheduled for release globally in mid-November.<\/p>\n
