Economic powerhouse Taiwanese companies based in China may be forced to relocate if they feel \u201cunjustly pressured,\u201d the island\u2019s vice president warned on Tuesday after Chinese authorities launched a probe<\/a> into tech giant Foxconn.<\/p>\n

The Taiwan-based company \u2014 one of the world\u2019s largest contract producers of electronics and a key supplier for Apple\u2019s iPhones \u2014 is under tax and land investigations in several Chinese provinces, China\u2019s state-run Global Times<\/em> reported<\/a> on Sunday.<\/p>\n

It did not specify what authorities are looking into, nor any offences that Foxconn may have committed.<\/p>\n

The company said on Sunday it would cooperate with relevant authorities \u201cfor the operations concerned,\u201d without providing further details.<\/p>\n

The probe comes as self-ruled Taiwan \u2014 which Beijing claims as its territory and has vowed to seize one day \u2014 prepares for presidential elections in January.<\/p>\n

Vice President Lai Ching-te, the current election frontrunner and head of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), warned that Taiwanese businesses might move out of mainland China if they feel \u201cunjustly pressured\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they grow wary and fearful, losing trust in China, they might gradually relocate their bases to other countries,\u201d he said at a press conference.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would be a significant loss for China,\u201d Lai said.<\/p>\n

He urged China to \u201ccherish and value\u201d Taiwanese businesses and not to pressure them \u201cevery time there is an election, asking them to express allegiance or even to support specific candidates.\u201d Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry, is China\u2019s largest private-sector employer, with more than a million workers nationwide.<\/p>\n

Its billionaire founder Terry Gou \u2014 who handed over management reins four years ago \u2014 is currently running as a long-shot independent candidate in January\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n

The other presidential candidates are Hou Yu-ih of the main opposition Kuomintang party and Ko Wen-je from the small Taiwan People\u2019s Party.
\nKo, a former Taipei city mayor, said Tuesday the Foxconn probe reflects Taiwan\u2019s predicament as a \u201cworld orphan\u201d due to deteriorating cross-strait relations with China.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe biggest problem\u2026 is that the Taiwanese government has no way to communicate with China on behalf of Taiwanese companies,\u201d he said at a briefing with foreign media in Taipei.<\/p>\n

Since President Tsai Ing-wen was elected in 2016, Beijing \u2014 which loathes her for refusing to accept that Taiwan is China\u2019s territory \u2014 has cut communication with her government while ramping up military, diplomatic and economic pressures on the island.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
