Imperial College London has renamed<\/a> its Central Library\u00a0the Abdus Salam Library in recognition of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist.<\/p>\n

A premier university in London, England, it was founded by Queen Victoria’s consort Prince Albert.\u00a0Imperial is also regularly ranked amongst the top 10 best universities in the world.<\/p>\n

Professor Salam\u00a0made a major contribution to\u00a0quantum field theory\u00a0and in the advancement of mathematics at\u00a0Imperial College London. He also co-founded the\u00a0Theoretical Physics Department at Imperial College.<\/p>\n

“Throughout his career, the Nobel Prize winning Professor of Theoretical Physics Abdus Salam made a tremendous contribution to Imperial, as well as to the world of physics and science more generally. It is right that we do more to celebrate this legacy. I hope the new Abdus Salam Library inspires many more people in the years to come,” said\u00a0President Hugh Brady.<\/p>\n

The university’s management board decided to rename the Central Library after Professor Salam as part of its response to a report by the History Group. The report focuses on the varsity’s\u00a0associations with historical figures and undercelebrated people from the institution’s past.<\/p>\n

“Recognising\u00a0the contribution of academics\u00a0like Professor Salam is a key part of\u00a0Imperial\u2019s\u00a0response\u00a0to this report.\u00a0Further work is underway\u00a0to respond to\u00a0its findings, including\u00a0other\u00a0initiatives to\u00a0recognise\u00a0undercelebrated individuals\u00a0like Professor Salam, both physically\u00a0around\u00a0our campuses, through portraiture\u00a0or through scholarships,” said the statement on the university’s website.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Abdus Salam was honoured with a Nobel Prize for his work in physics at Stockholm, Sweden\u00a0in 1979.\u00a0He was Pakistan’s first Nobel laureate and worked to improve the scientific base of students hailing from the developing world. He also advocated for the peaceful use of nuclear technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
