{"id":16881,"date":"2023-10-22T18:11:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-22T18:11:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/india-says-relations-with-canada-passing-through-difficult-phase\/"},"modified":"2023-10-22T18:11:05","modified_gmt":"2023-10-22T18:11:05","slug":"india-says-relations-with-canada-passing-through-difficult-phase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/india-says-relations-with-canada-passing-through-difficult-phase\/","title":{"rendered":"India says relations with Canada passing through difficult phase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>India on Sunday said its relationship with Canada is passing through a difficult phase and there had been \u201ccontinued interference\u201d by Canadian personnel in New Delhi\u2019s internal affairs.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian government is angry that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1776704\/indian-envoy-expelled-as-pm-trudeau-links-delhi-to-sikh-leaders-death\">suggested<\/a> Indian agents might have been involved in the June <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link--external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/jun\/20\/advocate-separate-sikh-state-india-shot-dead-canada-hardeep-singh-nijjar-temple\">murder<\/a> of a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia. India denies the allegation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe relationship right now is going through a difficult phase. But I do want to say the problems we have are with a certain segment of Canadian politics and the policies which flow from that,\u201d India\u2019s foreign affairs minister S. Jaishankar said at an event.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" onload=\"setInterval(()=&gt;{try{this.style.height=this.contentWindow.document.body.scrollHeight+'px';}catch{}}, 100)\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:400px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1782246\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Canada had to withdraw 41 of its diplomats from India on Thursday as New Delhi decided to unilaterally revoke their official diplomatic status.<\/p>\n<p>Trudeau said on Friday the Indian government\u2019s crackdown on Canadian diplomats was making normal life difficult for millions of people in both countries.<\/p>\n<p>Jaishankar said India had invoked diplomatic parity under the Vienna convention, \u201cbecause we had concerns about continuous interference in our affairs by Canadian personnel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t made much of that public. My sense is over a period of time more stuff will come out and people will understand why we had the kind of discomfort with many of them which we did\u201d, Jaishankar said in a video clip shared by news agency <em>ANI<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Canada\u2019s Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said last week India\u2019s stand was unreasonable and unprecedented and clearly violated the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations.<\/p>\n<p>Jaishankare also said India had stopped issuing visas in Canada a few weeks ago due to concerns over the safety and security of its diplomats in going to work. He said India would resume the issuance of visas if there was progress in the safety of its diplomats working there.<\/p>\n<p>Around two million Canadians, or 5 per cent of the population, have Indian heritage.
