{"id":15887,"date":"2023-10-19T20:38:11","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T20:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/what-is-israels-endgame-in-gaza-invasion\/"},"modified":"2023-10-19T20:38:11","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T20:38:11","slug":"what-is-israels-endgame-in-gaza-invasion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pakistaninewspaperlist.com\/news\/what-is-israels-endgame-in-gaza-invasion\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Israel\u2019s endgame in Gaza invasion?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>The relentless Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip continues, with no obvious endgame in sight and no clear plan for how to govern the ravaged Palestinian enclave.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Israel is vowing to wipe out Hamas in a relentless onslaught on the Gaza Strip but has no obvious endgame in sight, with no clear plan for how to govern the ravaged Palestinian enclave even if it triumphs.<\/p>\n<p>Codenamed \u201cOperation Swords of Iron\u201d, the military campaign will be unmatched in its ferocity and unlike anything Israel has carried out in Gaza in the past, according to eight regional and Western officials with knowledge of the conflict who declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has called up a record 360,000 reservists and has been bombarding the tiny enclave non-stop following Hamas\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779807\">surprise attack<\/a> on southern Israel on October 7, which killed about 1,400 people, according to officials.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Israeli troops in tanks and other armoured vehicles amass in a field near the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon on October 14, 2023. \u2014 AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>The immediate Israeli strategy, said three regional officials familiar with discussions between the US and Middle Eastern leaders, is to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1623705\">destroy<\/a> Gaza\u2019s infrastructure, even at the cost of high civilian casualties, push the enclave\u2019s people towards the Egyptian border and go after Hamas by blowing up the labyrinth of underground tunnels the group has built to conduct its operations.<\/p>\n<p>Israeli officials have said that they don\u2019t have a clear idea of what a post-war future might look like, though.<\/p>\n<p>Some of US President Joe Biden\u2019s aides are concerned that while Israel may craft an effective plan to inflict lasting damage to Hamas, it has yet to formulate an exit strategy, a source in Washington familiar with the matter said.<\/p>\n<p>Trips to Israel by US State Secretary Antony Blinken and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin this past week had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781573\">stressed<\/a> the need to focus on the post-war plan for Gaza, the source added.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (right) looks on as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaks to the media after their meeting in Tel Aviv.\u2014AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Arab officials are also alarmed that Israel hasn\u2019t set out a clear plan for the future of the enclave, ruled by Hamas since 2006 and home to 2.3 million people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIsrael doesn\u2019t have an endgame for Gaza. Their strategy is to drop thousands of bombs, destroy everything and go in, but then what? They have no exit strategy for the day after,\u201d said one regional security source.<\/p>\n<p>An Israeli invasion has yet to start, but Gaza authorities say 3,500 Palestinians have already been killed by the aerial bombardment, around a third of them children \u2014 a larger death toll than in any previous conflict between Hamas and Israel.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch  \"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A man reacts by one of the wrapped bodies of victims who died in an overnight blast at the Ahli Arab hospital in central Gaza on October 18, 2023.\u2014AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Biden, on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1782007\">visit<\/a> to Israel on Wednesday, told Israelis that justice needed to be served to Hamas, though he cautioned that after the 9\/11 attack on New York, the US had made mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cvast majority of Palestinians are not Hamas\u201d, he said. \u201cHamas does not represent the Palestinian people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron David Miller, a Middle East expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said Biden\u2019s visit would have given him a chance to press Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu to think through issues such as the proportional use of force and the longer-term plans for Gaza before any invasion.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"city-of-tunnels\" href=\"#city-of-tunnels\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>City of tunnels<\/h2>\n<p>Israeli officials, including Netanyahu, have said they will wipe out Hamas in retribution for the October 7 attack.<\/p>\n<p>What will follow is less defined.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are of course thinking and dealing with this, and this involves assessments and includes the National Security Council, the military and others about the end situation,\u201d Israeli National Security Council director Tzachi Hanegbi told reporters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know what this will be with certainty,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut what we do know is what there will not be,\u201d he said, referring to Israel\u2019s stated aim to eradicate Hamas.<\/p>\n<p>This might be easier said than done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an underground city of tunnels that make the Vietcong tunnels look like child\u2019s play,\u201d said the first regional source, referring to the Communist guerrilla force that defied US troops in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not going to end Hamas with tanks and firepower,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Two regional military experts told <em>Reuters<\/em> that Hamas\u2019s armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, has mobilised for an invasion, setting up anti-tank mines and booby-trapped explosive devices to ambush troops.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s coming offensive is set to be much bigger than past Gaza operations that Israeli officials had previously referred to as \u201cmowing the grass\u201d, degrading Hamas\u2019s military capabilities but not eliminating it.<\/p>\n<p>Israel has fought <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1779824\">three<\/a> previous conflicts with Hamas, in 2008-9, 2012 and 2014, and launched limited land invasions during two of those campaigns, but unlike today, Israel\u2019s leaders never vowed to destroy Hamas once and for all.<\/p>\n<p>In those three confrontations, just under 4,000 Palestinians and fewer than 100 Israelis died.<\/p>\n<p>There is less optimism in Washington, though, that Israel will be able to completely destroy Hamas and US officials see little chance that Israel will want to hold on to any Gaza territory or re-occupy it, the US source said.<\/p>\n<p>A more likely scenario, the person said, would be for Israeli forces to kill or capture as many Hamas members as they can, blow up tunnels and rocket workshops, and then after Israeli casualties mount, look for a way to declare victory and exit.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"clouds-of-war\" href=\"#clouds-of-war\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Clouds of war<\/h2>\n<p>The fear across the region is that the situation will blow up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1781747\">beyond<\/a> the confines of Gaza, with Lebanon\u2019s Hezbollah and Iran opening major new fronts in support of Hamas.<\/p>\n<p><figure class=\"media  sm:w-full  w-full  media--stretch    media--uneven  media--stretch\"><figcaption class=\"media__caption  \">A plume of smoke rises in the sky of Gaza City during an Israeli air strike.\u2014AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<p>Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian warned of a possible \u201cpre-emptive\u201d action against Israel if it carried out its invasion of Gaza. He said last weekend that Iran would not watch from the sidelines if the US failed to restrain Israel.<\/p>\n<p>Arab leaders have told Blinken, who has been crisscrossing the region this past week, that while they condemn Hamas\u2019s attack on Israel, they oppose collective punishment against ordinary Palestinians, which they fear will trigger regional unrest.<\/p>\n<p>Popular anger will ratchet up across the region when the body count rises, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has sent an aircraft carrier strike group to the eastern Mediterranean and is concerned that Hezbollah might join the battle from Israel\u2019s northern border. There has been no sign, however, that the US military would then move from a deterrent posture to direct involvement.<\/p>\n<p>The regional sources said Washington was proposing to re-energise the Palestinian Authority (PA), which lost control of Gaza to Hamas in 2007, although there is huge doubt whether the PA or any other authority would be able to govern the coastal enclave should Hamas be driven out.<\/p>\n<p>Miller, a former US Middle East negotiator, expressed deep scepticism about the potential for establishing a post-Hamas government to rule Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could paint you a picture more appropriate to a galaxy far, far away and not on planet Earth on how you could combine the UN, the Palestinian Authority, the Saudis, the Egyptians, led by the US marshalling the Europeans, to basically convert Gaza from an open-air prison to something much better,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, calls for the creation of humanitarian corridors within Gaza and escape routes for Palestinian civilians have drawn a strong reaction from Arab neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>They fear an Israeli invasion will spark a new permanent mass wave of displacement, a replay of the 1948 Israeli War and the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Millions of Palestinians who were forced to flee have remained stranded as refugees in the countries that hosted them.<\/p>\n<p>Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he rejected the forced displacement of Palestinians from their land into the Sinai peninsula bordering Gaza, adding that any such move would turn the area into a base for attacks against Israel. He said Egyptians in their millions would protest against any such move.<\/p>\n<p>East Jerusalem, captured by Israel in the 1967 war and then annexed, and Israeli settlement expansion across the occupied territory is at the core of the conflict with Palestinians. Netanyahu has openly embraced the religious and radical far-right, promising to annex more land to be settled by Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of Palestinians have died in the West Bank since the start of the year in violence perpetrated by Israeli soldiers and settlers, and there is widespread concern that the violence might engulf the territory as nearby Gaza burns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever worst-case scenario you have, it will be worse,\u201d a second regional source said about the potential for the conflict to spread beyond Gaza.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The relentless Israeli onslaught on the Gaza Strip continues, with no obvious endgame in sight and no clear plan for how to govern the ravaged Palestinian enclave.
