Veteran lawyer and former senator S.M. Zafar passed away in Lahore on Thursday after a prolonged illness, a member of his legal team said. He was 93.<\/p>\n
His funeral prayers will be offered in Lahore tomorrow after Asr<\/em> prayers, lawyer Hamid Khalid Butt told Dawn.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n Zafar had served as federal minister for law at a young age in Gen Ayub Khan\u2019s last cabinet. He had also served as the general secretary of the Muslim League for many years.<\/p>\n The veteran lawyer had also served as a senator as part of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) before announcing his retirement from politics in 2018.<\/p>\n Expressing grief at the lawyer\u2019s death, President Arif Alvi called Zafar a friend, an \u201coutstanding constitutionalist author and a brilliant advocate\u201d. He offered his condolences to Zafar\u2019s family and prayed for the deceased.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I finished reading his book Democracy and Islam in History<\/em> that he had graciously sent to me, I [\u2026] sent a message to him on his excellent treatise,\u201d the president said.<\/p>\n Maleeha Lodhi \u2014 former ambassador to the United States, United Kingdom and United Nations \u2014 described Zafar as an \u201coutstanding lawyer\u201d and a \u201cwarm and welcoming human being\u201d.<\/p>\n Former MNA Marvi Memon said the lawyer\u2019s death was a loss for Parliament and politics of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Veteran lawyer and former senator S.M.
